japanese is quite difficult to pick up unless you actually live there and hear it and get to practice on a constant basis. my sis tried it out she gave up after several months, its harder than most languages to pick up.

i took a few courses in chinese and japanese during school, but have since retained very little of both. chinese was a much harder to learn given the different tones/meanings for each word. japanese was actually kinda fun and i wish i had stuck with it more. plus, who wouldn't want to know what's going through a school girl's mind as she's being raped by demon tentacles? for the most part you just had to speak as written without worrying about tonal changes.

my school had a regular anime/japanese film night that i'd go to once in a while for listening practice. of course with dvd japanese language tracks it's more convenient nowadays to watch and learn at home, but admittedly it's no substitute for carrying on a conversation with someone.

i was able to understand a few lines in kill bill vol 1 and the last samurai without reading subtitles, so i guess the classes weren't a total loss. ...now you got me interested in picking the language up again.
