Finally decided to get some kind of tattoo...
...I know "what" i'm getting (i'll attach a 'rough' visual below) I'm just not sure where. I want it somewhere that is covered a good chunk of the time (ie, no hands, forearms, face, neck, etc). I'm thinking on the back between the shoulder blades.
Anyway, what I decided on was the Greek word (arete') in its original Greek lettering. "Arete'" is literally translated as 'virtue', and has been further stated by some to also be interchangable with 'manhood', though incorrectly. Like all literal translations, however, much is lost in the act. The term, which would be familiar to all readers of Plato, as he was borderline obsessed with it, is, in the broad sense, representative of the notion that you are to work to attain the pinnacle of your own potential in all regards, and it is THAT which comes to represent perfection of sorts. Thus, perfection is not in being perfect, per se, but rather in making the most of your unique faculties. For a variety of reasons, this really applies to my outlook on life, behavior, etc, etc and is very fitting to those who know me.

I like to translate arete as excellence.
I also like that in greek it almost looks like apathy, which would be the complete opposite of arete.

BigGreen, don't take this the wrong way but guys like you should not get tattoo's. You are too good for them. IMO tattoo's are for military men, sailors, rockstars, ex-cons, bums and wannabes. Of course they are no longer permanent so it's kind of a non issue.

And if you get it, make sure it's somewhere discreet. I'm getting lettering done in Italian soon, and it's gonna be somewhere discreet- tats' like that aren't the type that go somewhere high traffic and visible.

I got one on my ankle, calf and back about ten years ago over a one year period. No one can see them unless I'm in shorts or a tank top ( basically safe for business but always wore long pants when golfing). At this point I forget that I even have them. If I had it to do over I wouldn't have gotten any.

If my arms were like 22" I would get a tattoo. It would be a unicorn with a rainbow behind it. Underneath it would say "BADASS". I figure if I had 22" arms no one would say anything. Mark

I got 3 tattoos and have no regrets about any of them. They are all in places that can be easily hidden when I want and also shown when I want... Got one on my left shoulder blade, one on my right shoulder blade, and one on my waistline on the right side.

One day, I want a couple of tats...the next day I don't. I guess that means I should not get any...kind of like sticking your d!ck in a light socket....you might want to try it one day...but later you will regret it.
Big Green, I'm not real certain that I want Plato fans staring at a part of my anatomy long enough to translate anything. I've never met that many hot women that could be woo'd with a discussion of The Republic.
Bdtr...1 more post for 5k.
