    Shawshank Redemption

Is Shawshank Redemption based on a true story? It's narrated like it is... and has a "dedicated to..." line...

Did the dude really get sentanced for a crime he never commited, led an illegal money scandal with the warden, breakout by chipping threw the wall with a rock hammer and then crawl through 500 yards of sewage line to freedom... and then cash out with over 200k from 12 different banks the next morning...

Seems kinda far fetched... but the way it is narrated with a timeline and then the black and white photo still showing the cops wading trough the water posing with the hammer - anyone know if it is based on a true story?

It's based on a Stephen King story. It's fiction.

    Great movie, though!

If anything is true, it would have to be the innocent man in jail part.

As for everything else, I think it is mostly fictional.

Btw, another great prison movie is "The Last Castle."

    I highly recommend it

i dont think that its that far fetched at all. Based on the walls at the time (probably a sand/lime mortar mixture), and the amount of time that he had (20 years or so), I think that it can it be done. I think that the money part was the easiest. He had a warden who put him in complete control of the money. I would imagine that the regulations in the banking industry were far less than they are today.

One of my top 10 movies of all time....

Stephen Kings book was called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. I do believe it is fiction though. Still one of the best movies ever made imo.

maybe, im not sure, the book probably goes into detail about the poster and rambles about it for like 200 pages like most books that write crap just to make them longer

Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption is from a book of four novellas by Stephen King. Three of the four have been made into movies including Shawshank, Apt Pupil, and the Body (Stand by Me was the movie). The other one (can't remember the name of the story) was a horror that hasn't been produced as a movie. The whole book is only about 500 pages, so each story isn't super-long. But 3 out of 4 made into movies (two really successful ones) is a pretty good track record.

Great flick- totally believable- but fiction, or fictionalized.
