Thumbs down FDA approves RDIF tags. the future is now and it sucks

    The Associated Press
Updated: 3:23 p.m. ET Oct. 13, 2004WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved an implantable computer chip that can pass a patient’s medical details to doctors, speeding care.

VeriChips, radio frequency microchips the size of a grain of rice, have already been used to identify wayward pets and livestock. And nearly 200 people working in Mexico’s attorney general’s office have been implanted with chips to access secure areas containing sensitive documents.

Delray Beach, Fla.-based Applied Digital Solutions in July asked the FDA for approval to use the implantable chip for medical uses in the United States. The agency had 60 days to reply to the “de novo” application.

It’s the first time the FDA has approved the use of the device, though in Mexico, more than 1,000 scannable chips have been implanted in patients. The chip’s serial number pulls up the patients’ blood type and other medical information.

With the pinch of a syringe, the microchip is inserted under the skin in a procedure that takes less than 20 minutes and leaves no stitches.

Silently and invisibly, the dormant chip stores a code — similar to the identifying UPC code on products sold in retail stores — that releases patient-specific information when a scanner passes over the chip.

At the doctor’s office those codes stamped onto chips, once scanned, would reveal such information as a patient’s allergies and prior treatments.

The FDA in October 2002 said that the agency would regulate health care applications possible through VeriChip. Meanwhile, the chip has been used for a number of security-related tasks as well as for pure whimsy: Club hoppers in Barcelona, Spain, now use the microchip much like a smartcard to speed drink orders and payment.

I don't think they can constitutionally force people to get this implanted, but they sure as hell can make it **** hard not to. I imagine insurance companies are going to offer much lower premiums etc etc for people who get the chip.

I also have a friend who is a nurse, and she said that when they brought in fingerprint identification to access parts of the hospital they told people that "either they go along or they get another job" She is certain that RDIF tags will replace the fingerprint identification and that people who do not get the tags will be looking for another job.

I will never put that in my body, the day that the gov. tells me I have to is the day I pack my bags and never look back.

no doubt, like I said in post #3, they cannot constitutionally force people to do this. But employers can force employees to do it or get fired. And increasing pressure from the federal gov. will provoke such an occurance. I imagine that in a few years time it will be very difficult not to get this implanted, I would say insurance costs will be higher, finding decent employment will be tougher, and dare I say all military personal will be required to get one?

The thing about RFID is that ANYONE can read your tag. They merely need an inexpensive reader and be reasonably close to you. Granted the tag probably merely stores a single long number, but the potential for someone unintended to possess this info is alone cause for concern.

The noose gets tighter and tighter. Social security numbers, finger printing, having to register basically everything you own in one way or another to the gov't. Debit cards to track purchases/whereabouts. Onstar GPS in your car, sim cards in your cell phones. Theses are just the things we KNOW about, I'm sure there is much, much more that we don't.

I'll be dead before they stick one of those things in me as far as I'm concern that IS the mark of the beast.

Herein lies the problem. Yes it takes a pretty big needle but go in for surgery or perhaps a vaccination who's to say they don't inject one in anyway?

Yes I am serious don't be so short sighted. There are things going on in this world right now that you wouldn't believe right now. You're living in a bubble if you think otherwise (not flaming).

You think it's not possible or feasable to inject one of those things into someone without their consent or knowledge?

personally I think it's easier to just brand every baby with a barcode as soon as their born. Ink is cheaper than computer chips know what i mean.

I think the point is that it will eventually evolve beyond just your medical history. Soon those things will hold your criminal record, your credit history, etc. Then the readers will evolve to be able to read your chip from satellites and sh-t so "the man" can locate you anywhere.

My question is this. Are the chips read only? Cuz if so, you're going to end up with 50 of them all over your body cuz they gotta insert a new one everytime there is new info about you that you want to "broadcast".

RFID tags typically do not contain information about their "host". Normally they only encode an identifier, like your SSN.
