Lying on your resume... who's done it?

Someone I know has recently applied for a job that pays a substantial amount of compensation but requires a degree. He has all the right qualifications experience wise, just no degree. He lied on his resume about having a degree. The company HR rep held an interview with him, was impressed with his qualifications, and hired him.

So how many people have lied on their resume in any way? I am so tempted to do the same as the person above. What's the worst that can happen... I don't get the job?

There are places on the web that'll send you a degree/diploma in the program of your choice from any major university or college in North america. I figure I could always use that as my proof of graduation if they ask for it.

I am wondering if lying on your resume is worth it, if you truly have the right qualifications for the job?

Lying...no. Hilighting my credentials...yes.

They'll find out. Then he will be fired and have negative remarks about him if a new employers ever does a background check and phone the old company.

I think it shows a lack of honesty/character, and should you ever be found out, your reputation will be ruined.

im wondering the same thing, only id like to fudge the must have 1 years experience bit. How do you get the experience if no will hire anyone who hasnt got it

He'll get caught. I only know two people who did that... 1) my sister who was actually 5 hours short of graduation 2) a guy who was hired in a company i worked for years ago. Both got hired. Sister got fired after 6 weeks, the other guy after 3 months. HR will check credentials (as they did in these cases), its only a matter of time.

i admit, i did lie on mine....All my degrees are the truth, but my dad's friend owns a traveling agency so i put down 3 years of IT experience and made myself lool like top dog in that company, but never worked a day there....The guy is willing to cooperate with the story 100% so why the hell not....more money in my pocket based on my qualification.....just make sure u can back that schittt up at the interview to show u know what u r talking about....

Embelish the truth? Yep, "customise" my resume for an employer? Did it all the time...

Some people are born bullshïtters and will get away with outright lying... I'm just not good enough at it, I'd get tripped up in my lies on the firs tinterview

Well this place is all IT, and IT can be self-taught if you like doing it. Over the years you can pretty much teach yourself anything.

Yeah...... I was thinking that too. The friend in question who got away with it is the best bull****ter I've ever met. He should probably be an actor because he can sell himself as a doctor, lawyer, investment banker, etc. Think "Catch me if you can". lol. Me on the other hand I'm not quite as good

u lie only if u know the material u'll be talking about.....This is dumb to lie about a degree or certification unless u r from another country....This kid Jules i know put some much schittt on his resume him being originally from Peru, that he holds an executive position at the IT firm only with his BA degree that he got in US......This kid is rollin in some serious cash simply by embellishing here and there....he is working on my masterpiece now.

lie and embellisnh as much as you can witnhout being caught. Reason being 90% of people do that so to stay competitive you wuold have to as well.

I've had bosses who paid other guys to take math classes for them so they could get their degree. So while they did have a degree, they didn't really earn it.

On the other hand, I've known guys with degrees who were absolutely dumb as dirt . . . knew a business major who thought all the twinkling lights in the night sky were all meteorites--couldn't convince him that they are all stars, bigger than our own sun. And I've known lots of folks who made themselves look good by lying through their teeth, and put other people in harm's way as a result. And they were, incidentally, dumb as dirt, too, but pretty good at manipulating people.

Life is much better when you don't have to deal with people like that, and when you don't feel that you have to play their game to win their approval. Much better to run your own business, whatever it may be, and thrash 'em in the marketplace with competance and integrity. Feels better, too . . .

Don't most jobs requiring a degree ask for transcripts as well? I remember during a foolish stint where I thought about working and actually went on interviews, they'd ask for that stuff to be forwarded to their office as soon as possible. I can't imagine you could put them off very long.

Usually internships during the summer. I will be taking one with SUN or Forsythe in the summer.

You have to start out at a position that requires no experience. Like a Jr. Analyst or clerk or whatever.

I'm in the business world and I've never been asked for transcripts or proof of degrees or anything. Perhaps it depends on the line of work and the position.

After all the time I've put into working for a heartless machine I've decided that if I'm fired my next job will be CEO. I'll work up a great resume and thanks to my extensive background in telephony I'll place all phone numbers for refrences through my phone switch and tell them all how wonderful I am. If a degree is needed I'll get a fake one made up and lo and behold it'll have a phone number for them to call. Then I'll get a job paying me six figures and ride it until they find out then quit and move to a new state and proceed again. Within three years I should have enough money to retire. hahahahahahahaha

Bro just imagine if your hired on one of them lies, a skill you've said you had for example. Then it gets down to the job and you have f*ck all knowledge of what your doing

Ah i got a few interviews this week now and i diddnt need to lie. One of them pays £45k not bad for a 21 yr old

the issue is ethics..

once you get past that..

the real problem is the employer will not usually look if you have ALL the requirments, and you are a great worker..

if someone has a problem with you, and they want to fire you.. guess where they start to find a reason..

They were mostly consulting and i-banking firms. A good chunk of those jerks actually wanted to know how you did on the SAT and other standardized tests as well. They asked for and dug for just about *everything*.

i have a friend who has been working for one of the larger engineering firms in Houston as an engineer but has yet to graduate. He lied when he interviewed and the did not check, his plan was to continue going to school while he worked and eventually get his degree but the have kept him so busy he has not been able to. he has been working there for about 5years and has gotten several raises and actually does a really good job

I know someone personally that lied about having a degree when he
had none... He was in and actually they were so impressed with him
they did not care about the degree, but did as background check and
found out he was lying and so he 1st day on the job never came...

End of story... They, meaning any real company will pay to have a
background check done bro... I was there the day it happened...
I was the one that was suppose to help start training this guy as
was normal for his first 2 months or so...

so few employers actually do background checks, jesus only fortune500+ companies really do background checks, I know plenty of people who have lied on resumes and gotten away with it.
