Anyone here ever experienced actual combat?

Just curious to understand what it's like and how someone can even function knowing that any wrong move or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time can result in them being either killed or maimed.

Like Plato said, "Only the dead have seen the end of war"..

i mean alot of different ppl have different views on combat, i mean alot of ppl including me have been shot at, during police actions in other countries. it def was combat, war wasnt declared tho. something that happens between two drunk retards in a bar isnt half way near combat.

Yeah, I agree somewhat, I dont have a definition, but I assume combat is defined as agressive acts between two individuals or groups of people, so it would be considered combat in a sense?

Well, I see where your coming from since you were a part of the ARMY, and have experienced actual combat, but what you consider a good hamburger to be, I might consider to be a ****ty one. I know thats a bad example but.. I got this from Websters.com:

    com·bat ( P ) Pronunciation Key (km-bt, kmbt)
    v. com·bat·ed, or com·bat·ted com·bat·ing, or com·bat·ting com·bats or com·bats
    v. tr.
To oppose in battle; fight against.
To oppose vigorously; struggle against. See Synonyms at oppose.

    v. intr.
To engage in fighting; contend or struggle.

    n. (kmbt)
Fighting, especially armed battle; strife. See Synonyms at conflict.

    Peace

I have never been shot at, but yes, I have been in combat. As in actually combat when I had to shoot at someone, no, not that type of combat. I flew unmanned planes in the army, and we were responsible for 80% of all target designating in Kosovo. So for 12 hours a day on the night shift, for 3 months straight, I lased targets that were destroyed pretty much everyday. My highest kills were 9 different targets in one night. The average was probably 4 to 5 per night.

As for confirmed kills on humans, I can only verify about 26. This was when I actually saw people at or near vehicles or weapon positions when the bomb was already falling and then impacted. Other times were simply still vehicle or weapon targets, or moving vehicles (which probably had people in them).

You don't really think about actually killing people until a few years down the road. Then it catches up with you when you grow up some and truely understand what it means to kill someone. It's not a warm and fuzzy feeling. this is why there is an age limit to people joining the military. the older you are, the more you are likely to question yourself before you have to make that decision. When you are young, you do simply as you are taught and trained.

I can confirm that with my own personal experience of combat. I was treated for P.T.S.D. in 1989 and have been going through a period just recently, and having treatment again. I don't wish to discuss it here, however I've discussed the situation with one or two friends from the board. If anyone suffere's and would like to discuss it I'm open to PM's, however I'm not an authority on it and can only discuss my own personal experience's with the condition.

However I have only limited 'net access for the next ten days as I'm waiting for a new computer to be delivered, my own went down on Christmas eve.

Yep, you will never again in your whole life make as close friends as you do while serving in a combat area. I'd say that it is even deeper than a sibling relationship like having a brother. Maybe even closer than a parental relationship. You literally know that your lives could rely on each other. And it is really never talked about, it's almost understood subconsciously. I have been out for about 4 years now. And a few months ago, I flew 1200 miles to see my best buddies little girl being born simply because he asked me to. And I only knew him for about 3 years in the military. But I consider him to be my best friend in the world. I'd do anything for him and he'd also do the same for me.

To make a long story short, the job sucks,...the people you meet and make friends with will last a lifetime.
