    LOTR 3 - question about the ending......

    why does frodo have to leave on the ship ??

    I believe, and I'm going out on a limb here........... that Frodo would be transformed into some Godzilla-like creature and destroy the Shire if he didn't leave............

    His soul was twisted by the weight of carrying the ring. To remain in his old settings would do nothing but make things difficult for him. To go to Elven "heaven" would be much better.

    Just my ideas. I haven't read the book in 20 friggin years, so I don't even remember if the movie was spot on. lol

    If I may: I have not seen the movie but in the book everyone who is a ring bearer- leaves for the Greyhavens, Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel, even Bilbo.

    Sort of like Florida for the old people, they all have to go.

    That is correct.

    I'm glad they didn't explain that in the movie though because it might have added another 20 minutes to the 1.5 hour ending.

    I thought he earned the boattrip cause of what he did. Alltough imo sam is the real hero, he does everything all frodo does is get beaten up, wimp.

    I am a LOTR super geek...that said, Frodo had to leave because the ring had taken joy out of his life in the shire. Also, the injury he received on weather top from the Captain of the Ring Wraiths would haunt him forever and never truly heal (as mentioned by Elrond in the movie). He was also plagued by the pain of his sting from Shelob (the giant spider at the top of Cirith Ungol). Both these pains came back to him annually in October and March respectively. All the ring bearers were allowed to travel accross the sundering seas to the undying lands, that includes Sam, as it is mentioned at the end of the Return of the King (book) that after his family has passed away, Sam turns the Red Book of Westmarch over to his children to finish and it is said that he went accross the sea, the last of the ring bearers...
