Current - Shaun Alexander (I'm in AL so I gotta take him)

Ever - Barry Sanders (if he ever played behind a mid 90's Dallas or Pittsburgh O-Line he would have 25k yards and still be playing.)

He could be so much better if he gave up the thug/gangsta lifestyle.

Emmit Smith simply because, well, he IS the best and his records prove it.

Currently the best, well, too many to mention that all excel in many areas.

i think that priest holmes is one of the more talented backs, playing half the season he was the number 2 or three scoring fantasy RB. But he plays behind a line that made derrick blaylock look like barry sanders.

It's gotta be tomlinson as far as guys playing right now. His line is really run of the mill, middle of the road and he scortches everybody.

Get outta here with that Emmit crap Swole.... BARRY SANDERS. Now, I will give Emmit his due. He is a tough SOB for playing all those years...but I really don't think he compares. I live in Michigan and hate the Lions, but stilll gotta be Barry.

Remember that line he ran behind in the mid 90's. They were able to blow anybody off the line and gave Emmitt holes 5 & 6 yards wide. I hated them, but that team was bada$$.

I'm a Dallas fan anyhow, so I'll say Emmitt.

In addition, the record books say it too, so...........

I know the line was great, that is the point of being an offensive lineman, to be good.

Barry could have played w/that line and gotten his knee demolished and never set foot on a field again, u never know. So, going by truly WHAT IS in FACT, it's E. Smith.

    That is very bad!!!!

Emmitt holds the record for the most yards gained. Who was the best??
Subjective question to be sure.. Best what?

One game, one back, one choice.........Jim Brown.

barry made people miss. they would hand him the ball and he could pick his own hole a better line would not have made a difference. emmitt was strong and loved to run between the tackles. bottom line is they have two different running styles barry sanders ran great but emmitt was a great runner. you can talk all u want about total yards but do u want a back durin the game to have 20 carries 135 yds and 1 td or do u want 26 carries 97 yds and 3 tds. Emmitt Smith 155
    Marcus Allen 123
    Walter Payton 110
    Jim Brown 106
    John Riggins 104
    Barry Sanders 99
    Marshall Faulk 97
    Franco Harris 91
these are all the great backs ranked by touchdowns.

I would disagree with Brian Westbrook. The one thing that is good about him is that he had 700 yards recieving because he lines up in the slot as a receiver. However as a pure running back he is not one of the best, only rushing for 800 yards this season.

sweetness having no superbowl td's is on Ditka. he called the fridge's number in 85 instead of letting the guy that carried that team for so many years get his.

westbrook is an excellent back, eagles are a passing team. If westbrook had the chance to establish himself in most of those games he would of had 1200+ for sure.

Curtis Martin. no one says him because hes not a showboat and doesnt have a gang banger look. He would have won the rushing title by about 600 yds this year if he wasnt taken out of every game this year in the 3rd quarter. (His back up ammased another 600 in Martins place in these games)
