    Weightlifting and Fat

I wanned to post this in a different section, but not too manny people reply there....

I had an argument with one of my workout buddies about weightlifting and fat burning....

I always knew that standard weightlifting alone tends to burn more glycogen and sugars rather than fat. Fat is harder for the body to access and it will not do so until other sources of energy are depleted (glycogen, etc.).

So he claims that wieghtlifting can burn fat...I'm not saying it is not possible...just that it almost never happens!!!

We will not consider at this point diet and cardio and other stuff. I'm talking about weightlifting alone.

What do you guys say? What happens with fat when you lift weights ?

I read about this in Muscle Development.
Let me high light what I read.
Korean and Japanese researchers show that combining weight training with aerobics is the best way to lose abdominal fat (J Physiol Anthropol. 22:129-135, 2003) little info about why weight training is important to fat loss. Danish researchers showed that fast-twitch muscle fibers are used more during weight training and burn more calories during recovery when the slow-twitch fibers are depleted of glycogen.
    Said to try this:
Run on a treadmill or exercise on the elliptical trainer for 60-90 minutes, which will reduce muscle glycogen levels in the slow-twitch fibers and ause more recuritment of fast-twitch fibersduring weight training. After the aerobic, train with the weight intensely for 30-50 minutes. This program overloads fast-and slow-twitch fibers and increases calorie use in all muscle fibers for the rest of the day and night. (Med Sci Sports Exerc, 32:973-982, 2004)
Don't know if that helps you or not.

The best way to displace fat is to replace it with muscle. Weights will help burn fat, from what I understand hours after your done with wieghts.

Like J-dogg said, the muscle you gain will burn calories, therefore burning fat. Working out will burn fat also if the calorie expenditure puts you below the calories you consume.

Every body is goin to react differently depending on the natural state of the body. I found that with my body, I get more intense pumps after I do about 20-30 minutes of treadmill or eliptical. I guess it gets the blood flowing. This also gets your heart rate up quicker and it will stay up longer if you go directly to the weights. And as we all know the longer your HR is up the more fat you're burning. HTH, Rig

If you never eat, you won't gain anything. Regardless of drug or supplement one may be taking. The key goal is consuming 1.5 times your body weight in grams for protein, around 5,000 calories a day and a respectable amount of fat. Split that up into about 5-6 meals a day. Keeps your body working and spreading the nutrients over the whole day instead of once or twice a day.

When on cycle you should do things big. Eat big, Train big, and sleep big.

Women over 30 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you, if they think they can get away with it.

For all those men who say, "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free". Here's an update for you. Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage, why? Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire Pig, just to get a little sausage.

Just by following the diet sticky on how to lean bulk and lifting, no cardio, I went from 16.9% BF to 11.4% in a little over a month and maintained my bodyweight, again I was coming back from a layoff so nothing impressive.

Any movement of muscle will result in calorie expendature. That said, working you a$$ off in the weight room will burn off a heafty dose of calories. Add some cardio to the mix and it just gets better.

    Yeah, I know bdtr........

It's strange because that is how I've been writing lately in a few excerpts, and it really works!

They are like catch phrases, but more of a post than just a phrase.

Whatever the case, they seem to leave many in a daze.

    That is how he plays.
