Two students from my alma mater were involved in a fatal accident last night. One dead the other in critical condition. Seatbelts would most likely have been the difference between living and dying. Say some prayers.

Seatbelts played role in tollway deaths
CHP says both teens killed weren't belted in; neither was another of the four injured survivors.

IRVINE – The two teenagers killed in an SUV rollover on the San Joaquin Hills (73) Toll Road were not wearing seat belts, and that likely contributed to their deaths, the California Highway Patrol said today.

Six teens were riding in a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo on their way to a school dance in Newport Beach when the crash occurred at about 7:10 p.m. Thursday

Jonathan Maxwell Schulte, 16, of Orange was dead at the scene, and Gillian Marie Sabet, 17, of San Clemente died at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, the coroner reports. Schulte was a student at Servite High School in Anaheim, and Sabet attended JSerra High School in San Juan Capistrano.

The injured included the driver, Ashley Melbourne, 16, of Aliso Viejo and John Buehler, 17, of Anaheim Hills. Both sustained moderate injuries and were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. Melbourne attends JSerra, and Buehler attends Servite.

At Mission Hospital with major injuries were Ryan Massey, 15, of Laguna Niguel and Madeline Moore, 15, of San Juan Capistrano. Massey attends Dana Hills High School, and Moore attends JSerra.

Melbourne, Moore and Massey were wearing seat belts; Buehler was not.

CHP reported that Melbourne lost control on the northbound tollway near Newport Coast Drive. KCAL-TV/9 reported that the driver reached down to get something and the car swerved into the center divider.

"A passenger ... attempted to correct by turning back toward the No. 1 lane, and the vehicle rolled over several times," CHP officer Chris Johnson said.

Three people were ejected.

Johnson said there was no evidence that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

The dance was sponsored by JSerra High School, according to a school administrator who went to Western Medical Center afterward. The private Catholic school is in San Juan Capistrano.

The school's Web site identified the event as the Spring Fling Dance. It was scheduled to run from 7 to 11 p.m. aboard a Hornblower cruise boat in Newport Harbor and include a sit-down dinner and dancing.

My best friend is a paramedic who never wore a seatbelt until he started going to accidents where it would have meant the difference between life/death or life/life in a wheelchair, etc. Very sad story - buckle up, bros.
