America Alone by Mark Steyn (2006) - might not see eye-to-eye with the politics, but can't argue with the statistics.

His assessment of present-day Japan is on target: "...in a childish infantilized self-absorbed society where adults have been stripped of all responsibility, you need never stop playing with toys. We are the children we never had (p. 25)."

'Captivating' by John and Stasi Eldredge. It's a book about discovering a woman's soul. I just finished reading "Wild at Heart' by John Eldredge and that book was about discovering a man's soul. So my wife is reading 'Wild at Heart' so she can learn more about me while I read 'Captivating' to learn more about her.

And let me tell you....it has been a wonderful experience!

i like reading about wwII history. reading A SOLDIERS JOURNAL by james bollich. i usually read for about half an hour at bed time, then i fall asleep. my wife reads alot but she reads fiction crap....

I like WWII history too. If you haven't already, check out "Ghost Soldiers" by Hampton Sides. It's about the Army Rangers rescue of 500 American and Allied POWs from Cabanatuan prison camp in the Philippines. I believe it was also made into a movie, "The Great Raid," with Benjamin Bratt and James Franco. I haven't seen it yet, because the Japanese have banned it.

"The Warrior Elite" is outstanding, as is "The Finishing School", both by Dick Couch. I hope I'll run into Mr. Couch this summer when I go home to visit my folks.

I'll have to read about Jens Pulver. He was mentioned in "A Fighter's Heart" by Sam Sheridan, as the author spent a while training with Pat Militech in Iowa.

That's honestly cool. The things mankind has invented and built are mindboggling.

There's a lot of good posts on here. I'm going to check out some of the books ya'll are reading.

With regards to reading foreign language books, passive learning (i.e., listening & reading) is fine, but actual production and interaction (speaking & writing) with a more proficient interlocutor has been shown to be significantly better for language acquisition, both in SL and FL learning contexts.

FL learning (e.g., learning English in a non-English speaking country, like Japan)
SL learning (e.g., learning English in an English speaking country, like the U.S.)
