Which wine for my lady friend and I?

I'm having a date come over in a couple of nights and she suggested we get some wine, have some ice cream, and watch a movie at my place. I don't know much about wine, and since I'm only 20 years old, I can't go in myself and talk to a knowledgeable salesperson, so I need to send a friend. But I don't know what kind to ask my friend to get. Any suggestions? And none of the really fancy and expensive stuff.

I like Cabernet myself. I guess you do not want anything too cheap? So maybe stick with a bottle that costs around $20. One of my favorites in the price range is Wild Horse.

IMO wine and icecream don't really go together.
Since your 20 I imagine she too is about that age, I think that a red wine might be to dry. Since it is served at room temp it might not be the one to start with. You would be safe to go for Chardonay or Pino Grigio. You can purchase these very reasonably and refrigerate. I actually drink it over Ice because I love ICE COLD wine. (I know this is not customary but I dine out in many fine resteraunts and you would be surprised how many people add ice. Normally though it is served chilled.
Either of these wines are fruty but not sweet and I think any brand you buy will be ok. Heck I've even used the boxed wine for parties and had no complaints.

I agree on both accounts here. Ice cream doesnt mix with wine and I would choose a Pino Grigio (trentino 2003 is my favorite cheaper wine).

yeah...most girls I know like pinot. however, if she is twenty then she prolly doesn't know too much about wine. if this is the case...boxed wine baby!!! I used to drink that shit all the time when I was a freshmen in college. It was cheap and effective. Careful though...it has the creeper effect.

If your going cheap almost any old white plonk chilled will do. You can get away with really cheap whites once their very cold and their still a good ol' leg opener.

Wine and icecream are a pretty weird combo but if you're going to do it I would iether go for a sweet Riesling, or Moscato (a sweet semi-sparkling white wine from Italy, quite tasty), a desert wine (ice wine perhaps but very pricey) or champagne but again on the sweet side, not too dry. Those are the only wines that I would even consider drinking with icecream.

Go for Rosemount Estate, Shiraz, it is fruity and full bodied. It is probably the best wine that I have ever had for the price 10.oo - 15.oo.

Shiraz is far from fruity, its a very spicy wine. I love it, esp. with India or Thai.

With ice cream I'd go with a very chilled white. Since you can't taste the difference in the grape go cheap and chill really cold.

If you want cold wine then buy a Sterling Chardonay, about $20. If you want to drink a room temperature wine then go with a red. Red wine and chocolate ice cream actually complement one another very nicely. Sterling makes a cabernet that is pretty nice but can cost you $30. Good luck with your date, don't forget to be a good listener!
