    Lump in mouth

I recently found a lump in my mouth and went to the dentist and he checked it and did an x-ray and said as for as he can tell its nothing. He gave me some mouth wash stuff to try for a week and if it didnt go away he said to come back. My question is how well does an xray determine the if a mass is growing in my gums.

It may be syphilis (the other guy said herpes) but I'm really not joking in saying it!

A lump growing in your gums?

Dentist is a good idea, but when I think lumps I think Medical doctor... maybe even cancer specialist.

May be nothing more than a cyst but I'd definetly want to have it checked out and maybe even get a biopsy taken and analysed.

Is there any discomfort/pain if pressure is applied to the lump?

    Questions:

    1) Where exactly in your mouth is the lump located? (tongue, lip, gums next to teeth, etc)??

    2) How large is the lump (approx. in millimetres)?

    3) What color is it?

    4) How long have you had it and did it arise suddenly or over a period of time?

    5) Is it raised or sunken?

    6) Is it hard or soft?

If you answer the above questions, perhaps I can help.

I would go to an MD like red suggested, I don't think a dentist can do anything for you, xrays are good for seeing a lump, but not good for telling someone what's inside.

....definitely make an appointment with a dentist first who knows what he's doing. Sounds like the other dentist doesnt know jack. Sounds to me like it could be a parulis (a "gum boil" secondary to the nerve of a tooth dying or dead in the area). Simple tests can be done to determine this. Also could be a periodontal abscess (something stuck in the space between the gum and tooth, like a popcorn hull or something.). Probing the gum space with a blunt instument should rule this in or out. Also, feel around on the other side of your mouth and see if there is a similar "lump" in the same area. Many times, folks have an overgrowth of bone lateral to the inner lower jawbone (exostosis) which is totally harmless and benign. However, if it gets irritated by impacting a hard food like a dorito chip, people notice it for the first time and then start playing with it. Then it is a vicious cycle of soreness, since they cant stop messing with it. If the dentist still cant find anything, go see an oral surgeon who should take a biopsy of the lesion to find out what it is. It really doesnt sound like it is a malignant lesion or anything serious, so dont worry (but get it taken care of).
Let us know what happens - I am interested!

I have had that once or twice, it was not herpes and went away in about a week. If you feel with your tongue inside your lower lip there are bumps there and throughout your mouth or perhaps they should be called nodules.
