it's completely open to interpretation. if you read ellis' books, there is a recurring theme of trendy people all looking the same. like in less than zero everyone has, "short blond hair and a tan."

in american psycho everyone wears to same suits, same glasses, same haircut, but esp. patrick and paul allen.

so you left to ponder are there yuppies so homogenous that they really can't tell each other apart (which would explain why paul allen was spotted in london after patrick killed him), or is he delusional?

i think one of the most clever things is that bateman is either psychotic or psychotic, meaning he's either a sociopath (which people refer to as psychotic in general usage) meaning he kills without remorse, or he's psychotic in the clinical sense (ie shizophrenic) meaning he's completely lost touch with reality.
