what exactly are the rules for these types of fights? MMA stated that there were rules against Gannon using most of his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques - are there many other rules that say you cant use certain techniques of fighting?

i'm sorry, i misunderstood. i always get so amped when i see that fight. for those of you new to the board, i train with gannon, and i was AT the Gannon/Kimbo fight, so you'll have to forgive me if i get over-excited.
you are 100% correct that it would have been more entertaining with rounds, but we negotiated the rules with kimbos crew, and we thought no rounds would favor Gannon because he is usually in better shape. however, gannon then bady sprained his ankle (couldn't run) AND tore his labrum (couldn't box), so he didn't have the big conditioning edge we expected. he looked like hell, but he won that fight on pure heart.

the rules were actually negotiated with Iceberg (kimbos manager). we wanted a pure no rules fight, but he was afraid of Gannon's wrestling and jiu jitsu, so he asked for no groundfighting. he didn't realize there were standing chokes and submissions - the guillotine was completely legal. so were the knees - he asked for "no kicks", but in the rules we defined kicks as "striking with any part of shin or foot" and he signed off on them.
New York has a pretty good Underground scene too, and you can often just negotiate the rules you want to fight by with your opponent , as long as they are agreeable.

gannon definitely had more facial damage, kimbo went for the head, while gannon used a concentrated body attack to take his strength and wind - the winning strategy. for those that don't know fighting, 90% of gannon's body shots were perfectly placed, bottom of floating ribs, right side, slight upward angle (the shot mickey ward dropped gatti with). it's called the "liver punch" and it hurts twice as bad as being hit in the nuts full force.
it wasn't just a matter of kimbo being out of shape and "gassing out". most of gannons opponents, well conditioned professional fighters, fold within a few minutes of this kind of attack. i was amazed he took it as long as he did.
