what is GBL....

hey guys, my friend is trying this stufd called GBL....he says he gets in the deepest sleeps at nights a feels it really works. Im just curious what it is, i have never heard of it before. Is it an illegal or legal substance?...does anyone no sides, or positive/negative feedback from it?
