ok so whats the difference btwn progressive, doom, black, death, screamo, thrash metal?
for the most part it sounds the same to me

Thrash is really fast in your fast guitars and quick drums with quick(but not always) vocals the spped of the music usually gives it away like slayer and old metallica, anthrax megadeath
doom is based around deep riffs and long songs that make the mood feel black depressing the originators are black sabbath but candlemass and type O negative are also good as well
Black metal is more of a life style but is a genre of music as well it sounds almost like death sometimes but has its own style of vocals, but a lot of times has keyboards with raspy vocals. Mayhem and venom and first up to bat but there are so many bands out now like old mans child Dimmu borgir and others. Its based around anti-christian values and stuff for the most part.
Death can be a lot of things it can be slow riffs, fast drums or fast riffs fast drums screaming riffs and vocals usually you couldnt understand unless you read along with it in the booklet grows and grunt are what your looking for here with some screams Possessed and Death are the originators but like black there are lots of them out there most popular cannibal corpse, six feet under arch enemy...
Scremo well I'm not sure but I think its a mix of emo and hardcore Id have to look that up but I'm not a big fan of emo so I dunnoLast edited by 24labor; 12-15-2005 at 10:51 PM.

dont forget that grindcore and goregrind can be confused with death metal and in the sense it sort of is but its a little more comlex with the fast paced music and vocals to go along with it. Goregrind in insane music with vocals that sound like someone talking with shit in their mouth
There are lots (and I mean tons of them some so stupid they shouldn't be)of sub genres such as:
hardcore
metalcore
mathcore
power
gothic
folk(not missing much)
viking
symphonic
and there are even others that spawned off these
some of them that makes them diffrent from each other is just a small part like viking metal is basically named that because bands sing about viking related material with some other variations but you get the ideaLast edited by 24labor; 12-15-2005 at 10:32 PM.

In my book I'd say the main genres are
traditional
power
speed
thrash
death
black
doom
progressive
hardcore/metalcore
grindcore
Punk(if your into that but you know what seperates punk from the rest)

Looks like I'm a little late getting into this one but I listen to Pierced From Within by Suffocation at least every 72 hours.
Also Cryptopsy, Malevolent Creation, Deeds of Flesh, Immolation, Opeth (for those long drives) Old Hypocrisy....too many to name.
Someone mentioned doom..The only doom I only listened to regulary was War Horse.

The drummer from cryptopsy was amazing. On CD and in person. None So Vile cannot be matched.
Immolation, goat whore, gorguts are all so much better live than on CD.
Krisiun is pretty raw.
IMO Nile sucked live.
Hate Eternal sounds like shit live
Suffocation is still my favorite With Mike Smith back on drums. Would love to see Doug Cerrito back in the line up.
