Someone told me long ago that bodybuilding is a gay sport

I find that hard to beleive cause many guys I know who work out are straight.But many websites promote bodybuilding as a gay sport so what are your views on this matter?

It really pisses me off when people say that. It comes from pure ignorance of society toward what bodybuilding is all about. All they think it is about are guys standing in "thongs" and posing nude. It's the same with the reputation that us "musclebounds" or "jocks" or whatever name they apply to people with large muscles are ignorant or stupid, when in reality they only display their ignorance by assuming that. It's just an ignorant social stereotype.

A sport by definition is a competitive activity with a set of rules.

Does this mean that people such as myself are not taking part in a "sport" while those who step on stage are? I would like to think my dedication and effort should not be undermined because I use bodybuilding as a means of self-satisfaction rather than for competition?

I too hate it when people think that I am gay because I support many of the pro bodybuilders.Bodybuilding is supposed to be for increaseing your health and well being.

Okay, serious answer . . . Who cares? It's a non-issue. Bodybuildng is both a competitive sport and and an art form. And whether a body builder is straight or gay, chances are that he or she could kick the crap out of most other people.

So what are we going to do next? Question the sexuality of people who go to bodybuilding competitions or applaud when someone flexes well? My first-paragraph joke aside, things are gettin' a little stereotypical, if you get my drift.

The true question, of course, is why someone who is presumably straight would be reading web sites that promote bodybuilding as a gay sport.*

I know that the following and many of the fans of bodybuilding are gay. That is a given, with the nature of the way the sport is presented..... I.E.

Men with extra masculine physiques, parading around on a stage with less clothing than most of us would ever think of wearing.

But most men who participate in bodybuilding are DEFINATELY not gay.

I agree that bodybuilding is a sport because of the training and physical effort involved.

And anybody who doubts Ballroon dancing is a sport I challenge them to watch a contest and "attempt" so of the precise moves that the dancers perform at the speed they perform them.

Wrestling, boxing, and bodybuilding are the the toughest sports to compete in, IMO. Dieting is a 24/7 job, if you mess up on that, kiss your Sandow good bye...do you see a basketball player shooting hoops all day every day? All sports require physical effort, just some...more than others.

Oh...you may even throw bicycling in that category. Tour de France....climbing those hills?!?! Ya right.

I have watched Ballroom Dancing up close and it's not easy and the athletes trains as if it is a sport.

And yes the participants in Ballroom dancing are ATHLETES !

Listen man people are going to say what they will. Chances are every man in the world has at one time looked at a bodybuilder and said to themselves "wow I'd like to look like that one day." All little kids look up to superheroes and bodybuilers look just like comic book superheroes so what does that say?
The ignorant people that pass remarks like that are the people who don't have the heart to train like we do. They have no self disipline, but still deep down they wish they were bodybuilders.

The people that ask tend to be those that follow football where they hug and kiss eachother in front of millions of people but that is accepted because its a MANS sport

Sexuality has no relavance to any sport why should it? I have had people at work ask me because I workout and they think that most BBers are gay.Putting your arm around them and asking for a kiss normally deflates the situation quickly and they feel stupid but laugh about it.I guees the expression "Never judge a book by its cover comes to mind"
