weird way to check body fat.

I went to the gym to get BF checked. He asked when i last ate , hight and weight. Then he made me hold this playstation pattle looking thing. I held it straight out from me and he esp that my BF was 12% which sounds about right. I would like to stay in the 12-15% range when bulking. How do these things work ? I am use to the old fat caliper.
