I was (briefly) entertaining the idea of applying to a Ph.D. program that required knowledge of two additional languages than those that I already speak (two of 'em). To begin satisfying these requirements i researched my ASS off. The bottom line is that there is no single more effective method (from what i've heard) than entering Middlebury College's summer language schools. They weren't insanely expensive (particularly if this additional language will raise your pay or ability to earn) and carry a reputation that is literally second to none. Not sure if you can afford to give up a good chunk of your summer though. If that is not an option, community college courses are a great option (you will get back what you put in, even if the other students aren't as 'motivated'), as is private tutoring. If you're enrolled in school, audit as many language courses as you can, that way, you don't have to worry about the exams and homework if you don't want to, but get to immerse yourself in the instruction.
I will check out Middlebury. My hectic schedule is usually during Sept-May so I might be able to swing the time.
