There's so many good movies (and even more lousy ones), but I'll name a few: Apocalypse now!, Fight Club, Scarface, Leaving Las Vegas, Snatch, Trainspotting, Natural Born Killers and The Matrix..

I'm with Pete. It's to hard to name just one. Here's my list:
Amadeus, Fight Club, When Harry met Sally, Groundhog Day, Scarface, The King of New York(Chris Walken rules), The Natural(Best Sports movie ever), Meet Joe Black(Great acting and story and it has Claire Forlani(Wow, in it), The Terminator(especially the first half). Sleepless in Seatle(Love Meg Ryan). Gladiator. There's a lot more I'm leaving out. If I had to name one I would probably say Amadeus(Greatest genius to ever live) But there are so many great ones.

Cool Interesting responses as usual . . .

. . . although some of them are rather recent. I guess the question I ask is whether people will still want to watch them, say, 50 years from now. (Yeah, Fight Club was cool, but I doubt that it's going to become a classic.)

Anyway, here's my list, in alphabetical order:

    - Amadeus (Pure brilliance.)

    - Auntie Mame (The non-musical version, a cult classic.)

    - The Caine Mutiny (Those damn strawberries!)

    - Cassablanca (and no one else mentioned it!)

    - David and Lisa (Simple but profound.)

    - Eating Raoul (My token bizarre entry.)

    - Field of Dreams (Yes, I cried at the end, too.)

    - Ghandi, Malcolm X, and Patton (Three diverse bio-epics, equally great)

    - Harold and Maude (Quirky, with great music.)

    - A Man for All Seasons (Scofield was brilliant, pure and simple.)

    - Mommie Dearest (My token trash entry, with the best line I've ever heard in a movie . . . "No... wire... hangers!!! Ever!!!")

    - Singin' in the Rain (Nothing profound, just pure entertainment.)

    - Sunset Boulevard (Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up...)

    - West Side Story (Crazy! Cool! Crazy! Tastes great! Less filling!)

(Maybe we should do one on favorite movie lines.)

Hey TNT, thats a cool list you have. Obviously you are a movie buff. I need to watch a lot of those you have on your list. This question is a very good and interesting one, thanks Shredz. I hope a lot more people reply. One I forgot is "The Shawshank Redemption." A great inspirational movie showing the power of the human spirit.

I think it would have been easier to get a short list on worst Movie ... so I will start that thread ...hehehe

Mine ...hmmmm ? another puzzler ...

    Red October .... Sabrina ( both versions ) .... Caddyshack , Godfather .... Final Coutdown ..... Finding Forrester ...

too many too list .... I have about 200+ dvd's and I only buy the movies I feel are really good .... so it may take awhile to narrow down ....

I like most of the movies that are listed so far. I am going to be a major dork though and say Benny and Joon. It's one of the only movies I can watch over and over again and still laugh. That's my choice on comedy. Matrix, I love that one too for sci-fi. And I also like any movie with Julia Roberts in it.

    Let the flames begin.
