what in the hell are "Referrals", exactly??

In keeping with my random threads and posts today, when you look at members' profiles, what do "referrals" mean/indicate? I have "0", but notice that occassionally people have one or even two if i recall. Should I be happy that I have none, or is it an indication that I suck? I mean, more than usual.

I think you get referrals when some one else joins AR and puts your username for a referral. But whatever, i have told many of my friends about this site, but see no need for them to have me as a referral.
