    gym rant.

I hate when a group of guys go to the gym together and tie up machines.

My gym has one good cable row and one good cable lat pull station. This group of 5 guys were alternating between the two the entire time I was at the gym (1 hour).

They were using them, but there was a lot of cutting up and bsing in between. And nobody else could get on the machines..

Just felt the need to rant. Anybody else?

Nah. I didn't want to wait 20 minutes between sets. I just used one of the older crappier machines. Just pissed me off that they were hogging the machines for over an hour

Ehhh, this is why I got to a big commercial gym. We have like 10 cable machines & 10 flat benches

But, yeah - specially if they are tools. If they are hard core, it's cool with me.

But, I see these late teen trolls that just take up space

I have my own equipment too. But I'm in the midst of selling my home, so I'm living with family for now. Not used to sharing.

I do get the groups but not too much. But more of one guy. Always at night time, never mornings. Think he is a doc, hes an older gentleman but in amazing shape, very strong. Im thinking upper 50's low 60's in age.

But everytime I see him, hes on one machine or bench for my entire workout. For example I could do an entire back workout and all he has done the entire time is the lat pulldown machine. Maybe 10-15 sets.

I was at the gym thurs night. crowded. I'm at the hammer pull down station, finish a set, put my shaker cup on the frame, and go get a paper towel to wipe the sweat off my brow. I come back, and some twenty something male is doing reps on my machine. I stand there, quietly, and when he finishes, he sees me and says did he take my spot? I say yes, but go ahead and finish, no worries. Trying to be a gentleman. So the kid does two more sets, and then spins around in the seat and is now facing the other way ready to begin a new routine. I'm like, mate, you're starting a new routine? I was in the middle of mine when you cut in line, then I give him a look of disapproval. He gets the point and splits.

How could he have not seen my shaker cup?

I doubt self center ppl see anything of yours :/

There was bench being held by a towel and a water bottle. the guy is MIA for more then the amount of time it would take me to do 5 sets of 15 reps both right and left. no other open bench and its crowded. he strolls up, places weights on rack, removes his towel and water bottle and walks off. At the same time 2 guys occupying 2 other benches. they lift and rest for 4 or 5 times the amount to lift. llllooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg rest periods. looking about, chatting back and forth and looking about, more chatting back and forth.

it would be nice if common courtesy was posted at the gym

All good reasons I like working out at my small debunked gym at work at 2am and also why I'm pissed off that they are closing it on the 30th. Now I am going to have to start using a real/commercial gym again.

I take fairly long rests in between sets, ranging from 3-4 minutes, but I have no problem if someone comes up and asks me if they can work in. And I expect others to do the same for me.

I don't have problems asking Excuse me. Do you mind if I work in?

Then I get the typical response...I am almost finished, I only have 2 more sets to do or a stupefied look of wTF you talking about.

    How would you respond?

Ahhhh. I thought only i got that crap. ( there aren't many woman in the free weight area and only a couple that know what they are doing.).

Sometime the gym is more of a hangout then a sweat shop.

Response to 'I only have 2 more sets to do': Repeat myself, "Sooo...do you mind if I can work in?" Say it in a way that would make them come off as looking like an a$$hole if they didn't oblige (preferrably set the tone of your dialogue so other gym members can hear it), without making yourself looking like one.

Response to the 'wtf are you talking about' look: Again, repeat myself (after a long, awkward pause), but this time say it as though you were talking to a 5 year old who didn't understand you the first time.

In the gym, as in life, what goes around comes around, so you could always mimmick his/her attitude and not allow them to work in with you at some point. But in this case, I would do the exact opposite. Let them work in with you everytime they ask. Be enthusiastic about it as well, i.e. "Of course you can work in, buddy!!" Either they'll change their ways in the future, or you will succeed in making them look like an a$$hole to every other member. Gossip travels fast in gyms. A lot of times you can make your point without even directly starting any gossip yourself. More of a passive-agressive approach.

Mp859, the comment I made above would only be reserved for times when there is only one piece of equipment for a specific exercise. For example, the gym I go to only has one squat rack. It sucks, but I've asked people before if I could work in, and have also allowed others to work in with me. But I agree, if there's more than one piece of equipment then it would only make sense to use another one.

I guess either way it isn't ideal, but it's just things that you have to put up with sometimes.

last year, my gym put up TV's all over in the bench and squat areas. What the hell? Now blokes take even longer as they seem to lag while watching TV, even when it's crowded.

This is something I could not deal with Times. And there's no excuse for it. If you want to watch TV, then stay home.

BTW, do you mind if I PM you about your TB500 experience? I read your log, but have some questions.

So a new gym rant. Went to do shoulders today. Finished my bb press. Next 3 movements I wanted to do were dumbbells.

My gym has 2 sets of each weight. All the way up to 110. There was not one match of weight from 10-65# today. Db were freaking everywhere. 3 kids had at least 4 sets doing 3 or 4 movements at once in between talking.

Ended up doing everything on cables. Wasn't the best workout but got it done.

Yup, pronated, supinated, then I grab some dumbbells and walk back into the rack to super-set neutral grip with cheat curls.

OK now that I have had to go to a real/corporate gym 2x this week due to my small gym at work having to close I have a gym rant.

I noticed the same thing the last 2x this week that I noticed when I went a couple of years ago. Even the people who are working out are not even breaking a sweat. I usually break a sweat in less than 10 minutes and most of these people were there long before I got there.

I see people walking around yawning and looking bored. I typically do 3+ sets for their every 1 set. I dont see hardly anyone who looks like they are straining or doing a forced set.

It's funny, when I walk in I feel a little self consious because I am typically a bit older than most of the crowd in the free weight area but after looking around and doing a few sets I have to chuckle to myself and notice in the mirror I'm still quite a bit better shape and bigger than most of them.

There is always that one BIG guy who drawfs everyone though. Luckily he was leaving when I got there. lol

I completely agree, people are there on social media saying shit like #workinghard #shredded #dedication #shredication while they're half way through their 5 minute rest for a set of bicep curls.

Then you see these memes on Facebook saying 'who do you hate more at the gym, the grunter or the sweater' I think, so the two people probably working harder than everyone else? That erks me

OMG I have not heard that and I would probably unload on someone if I did. WTF do they bother to go for? You must really hate yourself to be putting down someone else who is working hard.

I do just the opposite. When I see someone who is working hard and you can tell they are at least trying I give them the approval node and always get a nod or smile back.
