Just tell whomever asks that you had your yearly physical and they're sending you the results....no big deal.

are you still in school (which is the only reason I can imagine parents justifying such "intrusion)? If so, let them know that you need(ed) to satisfy some sort of community service requirements, and had requested info concerning such programs from the hospital, and, damn, wouldn't you know, that was so long ago you'd thought they'd forgotten (that explains the immediate lack of an explanation somewhat..and isn't something so brutally important you'd have elaborated immediately).

Iron Horse ... Just out of personal curiosity, could things possibly have gone a little better had you told your parents the truth? (not nagging you here, just wondering)
Reason I am asking is that I'm now a parent myself and any time my son lies to me, I see right thru him... it's like he has "I AM LYING" stamped on his forehead... and I realized that when I lied to my parents they also saw right thru me (thought I had 'em fooled all those years!).
Oh, and a "Look dad/mom, I fucked up, XYZ happenned and I went thru hell because of it, but I didn't want you guys to worry about it or hurt you so I kept quiet about it" can sometimes go a loooong way.
Don't burn your bridges bro... you don't know what the future holds.

So now your parents are fearing the worst, right? They probably think you've got HIV or something else that serious but not always easy to talk about. I would have told them that you signed up with a volunteer agency and the hospital wrote to request your help.
