Morel mushroom hunters?
Come on Midwest guys! How many mushroom hunters out there?

Right here! I'm in the ga mountains though, so they are very scarce. I still don't know where to look, but manage to find 1 here and there. I'm a puffball freak. I love eating them. They're my favorite. I also like bolettes(the way I pronounce them) and chanterells (misspelled).

If you can find dead elm trees down there then you may be able to find some morels! I'd say the season has started down there.

Someone told me yesterday that usually by the 3rd week of April, they're on. But only a week or 2 max. Only time I've found enough to mean anything was around some ash trees in an area that had been burned off months prior. With this warm winter, they might have already came and went. We had a 75 degree Christmas. I wish I knew more about morels

Anyone ever had a hen of the woods? I found one a few years back that weighted 40lbs! I would give anything to have taken a picture. It was growing on the side of my driveway. It literally popped up in a day. It was amazing.

Just like anything else season starts early in the south and moves north with the warmer temperatures. No one really knows much about morels they are tricky. I do know they are delicious!

Never heard of that. I knew an old farmer that would pick the puffball mushrooms the day they sprouted and slice and eat them on the spot.
Puffball is the only term us rednecks had for them. They are white and round, when they die and you stomp them they send out green dust everywhere.

Lol. Stomping them is so fun. They are delicious though. I enjoy scrambling them with eggs. But hen of the woods tastes a lot like beef. When cooked, they even smell like it. I've grilled it and it's got texture and flavor of a very tender steak. So good. I haven't seen one in a few years now, but I hope to find one soon. I don't expect a 40 pounder again, but a nice 5 pounder would be great!

I freeze the morels. Brown them on each side then put them in a Ziploc Cryovac bag into the freezer. Pull some out anytime and throw them in some grease. Bon appétit!
