How far would you drive to get to a good gym?
I am a member at a decent gym, they have all the equipment I could want and it is relatively clean. I recently moved and now the 5 minute drive is 20 minutes (through the city, which is a pain in the ass). There is another gym that is 5 minutes away from my new place, but they are kinda shitty. Serviceable, but shitty.
So options:
-5 minute drive serviceable shitty gym (mostly machines, 2 squat racks, a few free weights and benches, no cables, in the slums)
-20 minute regular gym (2 squat racks, 3 power lifting racks, tons of benches and free weights, cables, machines, everything)
-17 minute drive there is a golds gym, but need to take highway and will be traffic on the way back
What would you do? How far would you be willing to drive for good equipment selection?Last edited by HoldMyBeer; 06-18-2018 at 12:45 PM.

Second or third option. If good gym has what second option has plus more, go for that then.

My normal is 15 min, secondary is 30min (usually weekends). I would drive 30min all the time if it were worth it, I get such a better workout when the atmosphere is right.

Yeah, normally I would say the same. But here is the thing, I am being a bitch.
Lately I have been got a lot of big, life changing, shit going on. I haven't seen results in a while. I am losing motivation in general (which includes the gym). So the extra drive time is eating at me (i go first thing in the morning, so I am battling city traffic too). So then I think it may be best to sign up for the shitty, closer gym. Then I think in a few weeks when I am back to my old self I will be pissed. What do thread?

If it were me, I would choose a the 20 minute gym option. If I had a gym across the street from me but only had 90% of the tools I needed to achieve my goals, I would still go out of my way to get to the right facility. I wouldn't accept losing 10% of my potential just for convenience.
For every $100 you made, would you leave a $10.00 bill on the ground?

I am not into fancy. If the gym has what I need, I am good. No cables... definite no for bodybuilding and isolation.
I look at the qty of people at the gym when I go. If I can’t get on the equipment that I need when I need it, then it’s a no go for me.
I do not socialize at the gym so that’s not an issue. I would also say gym etiquette plays a big part.
I work out at two different gyms each day because of the accessibility. One at 4:30 am on the way to work and one at night close to my home.
Due to limited time, the drive would play a part in selection.

Personally, I walk to an okay gym nearby. It has everything I need and the dumbbells go up to 100lbs. I could drive 20 mins for a Gold's though but it's too much a hassle.
At one point I had a golds membership and was planning on using it when I had more time but I ended up never using it. I'd recommend getting a membership at the 5 minute drive on and at another one and see which one you end up using more.

As far as it takes. You'll end up getting frustrated from the closer gyms lack of equipment/service anyways.
