The fully enlightened buddha or Just like bill gates.

This was a question presented to me in one of my first philosophy classes and was just curious to what people on here might answer.

If you had the chance to be the fully enlightened buddha or Just like bill gates(including the Billions) which would you choose, and why?

Well, if you had said "true love" or "money" I would have picked "true love" but to YOUR question, definetly the money

Well, if you are the fully enlightened Buddha you realize money doesn't necessarily mean happiness, I mean take a look at Bill Gates, for the richest man in the world I don't think I have ever seen the damn guy smile.

Well I guess it depends, and to each his own, BUT, I would (probably) rather NOT smile and be driving a Porsche, then be smiling and driving a 1994 Nissan Sentra

Don't get me wrong, money is great. It buys you things after all.
I think it would be nice to TRULY believe that money isn't really necessary for happiness. That is just a lot easier said than done. Truth is money greatly improves the quality of living, but not necessarily life. I've read that the upper class in society, some of the richest people, have higher levels of depression than your regular middle class family. Something to think about...

    p.s. money is great, haha

Well of course you're right in that aspect. I mean, there is nothing I would like more then living in a communist/utopian world. Where money isn't the issue, but knowledge and bettering ones self. BUT that will never happen (well nothing that's pure enuff). And unfortunetly in THIS world which we live in, it is all about money, very sad, yet very true. Without money you can't do shit all.

    Hmm....

If i paid off all my school loans, motercycle loans and credit card bills, then took a nice 2 month vacation to Ibiza I don't think I would be too depressed. But you never know.

I would definitely choose the money over all things like 'true happiness', 'true love', 'total enlightenment'.....why? Money is a thing you can do with or without it( to some extent ) and the other things are and end to which the means is the more important part. The means made the end what it is. Take the path to enlightenment, what makes it a sucess is the road in which you took to obtain it for yourself.

FINALLY, the answer I was looking for... haha, if you were the buddha you can be fully enlightened and pretty much know how the world "works" either allowing you to get by money easily or realize how unimportant it is and truly feel that you dont need it.

I'd still like to hear what others think...

Buddah! Whats the most important thing in life? Live it to the fullest! I find life more fulfilling with the more wisdom and knowledge I gain than with the money I make. The only thing money can buy is material goods. I think we would all agree that life goes much deeper than any material object in this world. Therefore by choosing money I believe you have already limited your life to materialistic endeavors. I want my life to be boundless, no limits. Therefore I say to hell with money and Bill Gates, I choose the road less traveled...or at least desired.

Love, laughter, fun, memories, family, friends, etc... Don't require any money

Cars, boats, jewels, and anything material, requires money...

    Which can you do without???

Personally I'll take enlightenment/wisdom any day over money.

(not to say that I can do without money because that is just plain near impossible)

    bump for more opinions........

enlightened I want to know how to be great.

I want to be a great dictator to know how to manipulate people to the fullest would be the best then you wouldnt need money people would care for you. You could ask then bill gates would give you what you wanted or you would launch a full military assault on his home/s and take all his money. hahah.

Screw being enlightened .....Show me the money!!!! Money makes the world go round. Who ever came up with the phrase "money doesn't buy everything" was a poor ass bastard looking for an excuse. I'd buy my enlightenment and my hot 21 yo girlfriend.

But you didn't say we could have both. Besides IMO Bill is one of the (if not THE) smartest men alive today.

I was just pointing out that even though he had all of those luxury's he still didn't value that as highly as wisdom.

No doubt Bill Gates is smart, after all you don't get to be the richest man in the world by accident.
