While it may not be intended to be "sad" per se, Bruce Hornsby's "shadowlands" gets my vote.

Another sure "tear jerker" of a tune: Poison's 'Somethin' to Believe in'

Probably haven't head it for years but this song always kills me.......The Winner Loses by Bodycount.

    My friend's addicted to cocaine
    smokes day and night
    drives mom and pop insane.
Living his life in the dark light
every dollar he gets goes into the pipe.......

See, i've always viewed "cannon" as the most versatile song on the planet (and that's why i think it's so brilliant). If you're down in the dumps, it's tragic; if you're ecstatic, it's uplifting.

Indeed! I find that when it's orchestred with a choir it's uplifting, whereas when it's orchestred instrumentally for strings only it's sad as heck.

I have to admit, classical is SO underrated and underappreciated. Classics never die.

Listening to Simon & Garfunkle "He Was My Brother" now... god I love that song!

    He was my brother
    Five years older than I
    He was my brother
Twenty-three years old the day he died

    Freedom writer
They cursed my brother to his face
    Go home outsider
This town's gonna be your buryin' place

He was singin' on his knees
    An angry mob trailed along
    They shot my brother dead
Because he hated what was wrong

    He was my brother
Tears can't bring him back to me
    He was my brother
And he died so his brothers could be free
He died so his brothers could be free

The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia
    In The Ghetto

    ===and=====
    LEADER OF THE PACK
    (G. Morton - J. Barry - E. Screenwich)
    THE SHANGRI-LAS (Red Bird 10014, 1964)

    [spoken]
Is she really going out with him?
Well, there she is. Let's ask her
Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearing?
    Mm-hmm
Gee, it must be great riding with him
Is he picking you up after school today?
    Uh-uh
By the way, where'd you meet him?

I met him at the candy store
He turned around and smiled at me
You get the picture? (yes, we see)
That's when I fell for (the leader of the pack)

My folks were always putting him down (down, down)
They said he came from the wrong side of town
(whatcha mean when ya say that he came from the wrong side of town?)
They told me he was bad
But I knew he was sad
That's why I fell for (the leader of the pack)

One day my dad said, find someone new
I had to tell my Jimmy we're through
(whatcha mean when ya say that ya better go find somebody new?)
He stood there and asked me why
But all I could do was cry
I'm sorry I hurt you (the leader of the pack)

    [spoken]
He sort of smiled and kissed me goodbye
The tears were beginning to show
As he drove away on that rainy night
I begged him to go slow
But whether he heard, I'll never know

Look out! Look out! Look out! Look out!

I felt so helpless, what could I do?
Remembering all the things we'd been through
In school they all stop and stare
    I can't hide the tears, but I don't care
I'll never forget him (the leader of the pack)

The leader of the pack - now he's gone
The leader of the pack - now he's gone
The leader of the pack - now he's gone
The leader of the pack - now he's gone

Two other great calls....i'd like to also add REM's "night swimming" (you have to be in a "down" mood for it to be effective though).

Also, this may make me somewhat sick and morbid, but the one instruction i've left (so far) if i'm to die is for Our Lady Peace's "I Love You All Along" to be played at my funeral, so I definitely think of it as a sad song.

And, ah hell, throw up Garth Brooks' version of "the dance" while i'm typing.
