Got an interesting phone call about an hour ago.....
Well an old friend I haven't spoken to in years has tracked me down and offered me a very interesting offer. back in college and shortly after I was involved in underground fighting circuit, well can't say where just yet. Anyways, money is good competition is fierce and rules are simple. No biting, no groin shots and no eye gouging. You fight until someone taps or k.o.'ed. I used to make up to $2000- $5000 grand per fight. Although a majority of the money usually went to hospital bills... i had a good record... 42-2 (10 wins by k.o.) Anyways i walked away after severly losing my last fight.... I broke ribs and tore up my shoulder. Well i just got offered a chance to get back into it and for my first come back fight if i decide to do it, if i win i get $3000, if I lose i still get $1200. So guys i'm not sure if i want to get back into it... do to my kids. I've seen good friends get permanently ****ed up doing this. But the chance to make some good quick cash is hard to pass up... so I'm leaving it up to popular vote.... yea or nay. I know where I stand compared to the competition and am willing to risk injury but than again I'm not sure if it's worth it. So watcha think?

~Hun, i dont think you should do it for 2 obvious reasons, but if you feel it is something that you need to do then you have to do what you have to do.....But deffinatly think about it!! ~

Hellz NO. Let me put it this way: let's say you not only make the 3K, but go on to make ten times that over the next, oh, i don't know, two years. So we have 30k, likely UTT. In forty years, I'd be willing to bet that there's a better than 50-50 shot, you'll be swearing up and down that you'd gladly pay AT LEAST 30 grand for someone to "fix" whatever lingering, ache, problem or what have you that will likely be coming into full swing with old age.

That is a tough decision, but I would agree with Spunhoney. You have to think of your children. I know I don't have to tell you that type of fighting could end up causing some permanent damage or even death. 42-2 is an amazing record. I think that speaks for itself. You have nothing to prove.

Spun... it's not anything I have to do, just something i've been considering since he called.
BG...i hear ya...I've always been good at fighting and used to depend on that skill alot. Now a days I hate to fight unless severly provoked. I just kinda miss the excitement of it all. i mean i went from playing college ball, fighting, almost going pro, becoming a SEAL and now sitting behind a desk and raising 2 kids on my own... I miss that edge I used to have.
I'm just not sure... i have up to next Tuesday nite to make up my mind.

Well pain and being hit doesn't effect me at all. that comes from a lifetime or childhood of having family members take turns beating me senseless... I was told it was just tough love. But the only thing keeping me from jumping in my car and doing it is my kids..... it's very tempting but looking at my kids sleep kinda scares me at the same time.

12-27-2003, 10:31 PM #9
No....plain and simple. If you were without children it would be another story but that's not your case.........

Isn't there a possibility of death? maybe small but is it worth a couple thousand dollars. what kind of fighting is it with gloves is kicking allowed? I wouldn't do it with kids. But I would if I was unnatached to anything

OK.... so I'm getting that ya'll think it's a bad idea than... Alright guys and gals ya'll win.... next time I talk to him I'll let it be known that I'm not interested. I may get involved in training some fighters though.... these young punks they have fighting now don't even compare to what we were like 7 years ago.

No glovers or any other protective gear allowed except mouth peices.. you can tape your hands up if ya want. Yes kicking and sweeping is allowed. Death is a possibility as in any kind of fighting but us fighters would not go that far.... first sign of severe trouble we'd back off. yes we wanted to win and kick the hell outta the othjer guy but we really never wanted to seriously hurt each other.

BT... If you are second guessing yourself cause of your out of shape then i'd say no, but if you are in shape endurance wise, You should go for it... Your record speaks for itself... do you know who you are fighting or will it be random when you show up... That is not a bad record at all, Where's BDTR when you need him, i say go for it... what is it five minute rounds or go until tap out or knock out...
As long as your still in shape, hell i'd lay an ass whooping if your getting paid for it...

LOL... i sound like a bad guy, but it's not like your doing this for your first time... Maybe sit this first one out, go watch the competition and then decide...That what i would do...

Haven't any of you guys seen Best of the Best II?*
*I don't mean to belittle the situation at all, but, hokey as that movie was, it does illustrate that bad **** can happen. Then again, I LOVE whitewater kayaking, in which there is always a pretty clear element of danger (maybe not as high, but not non-existent either) and I don't plan on giving that up if and when I have children.

I'm in shape for fighting bro... trust me. there is no time limit and no rounds... fight until someone taps or gets k.o.'ed. I already have a good idea of how the competition looks. And fights are scheduled 2 days in advance so when ya show up you know who you're fighting. alot of work goes into putting it all together and most of ya'll would be surprised at who all is involved with it around Texas.

I'd say all systems is go... Thats nice that you know who your fighting i went to a exhibition "underground" MMA fight, and you basicly pick the rules, time, and people you want to fight when you get there... 6 ounce gloves, open hand, no gloves, kneeing on the ground..etc. etc.
I say go for it man, Have fun laying an ass whooping down bro

well you could always tap out and lose your pride if you were hurt badly, and if you break your leg then go to work anyway and get involved in a horrible copier collision/accident and claim it broke your leg and recieve workmans comp

I think that's called "aging." Better get used to it, 'cause it doesn't get any better . . . lol . . .
Fighting for $3000 or $1200? Jeez, I wouldn't even debate a Jehovah's Witness for that . . . ain't worth it. Now, if they upped the ante to something with another three zeros after it, something that would pay medical bills and maybe living expenses if you were disabled for a while, that would be a different story.
I'm not saying you should be cautious, rather, you should get a reward commesurate with your risk AND with the $$$ return the fight organizers are getting.

BigT bro I've lived the crazy life when I was younger too bro. I know its not easy to accept that its over now. But we both have kids now and we just have to grow up and take the responsibility now. I always look back on the choices I've made in my life and how I got to where I am today. I miss the thrills of youth but **** man we have kids now and you know as well as I that they have to come first. This **** is too risky for a single parent bro. You know this. Sounds like fun though

in your shoes it would be a resounding no. responsibilities bro. anyway your heart isnt in it if you need our encouragement. stay safe. AD

I'll be the devils advocate here
Ah ya wuss just do it. Think how your kids will look up to ya too. Don't listen to these other wussies
Ok now seriously, it depends. If I needed the cash I'd do it, no biggie. I'm 37 and still fighting competive fullcontact kickboxing so its probably an easy decision for me. Plus I work door's on the weekends and fight for ALOT less than than buddy. You said your in good shape for fighting! so I take it your still putting in the road work and round after round after round of sparring?. If not, forget it. Being fighting fit is a little different than being fit enough to run for a bus!.
But $3000, right now to me thats not a bad deal. $1200 for an easy tapout too Gimme your guys phone number, lol..

RON... I hear ya bro.
Palme.... you scare me sometimes. Hahahahahah
Bouncer.. yes I still spar and go through grappling workouts 2-3 times a week with a buddy of mine that still fights. But like all these guys have said I need to rthink about my kids first. i may get into it later, just now is not the time.

I suggest joining a mma club and doing some competitions, make sure you are super fit, then re consider.
Its a tough call, i say no unless you are sure you are ready, for example i am 35 now , and friends keep asking me to work on the doors, i did this for 15 years and left while on top , but do not feel i have the endurance i had in my 20s, people always think you are the same man you were when you were 20, but that was a long time ago and then you did not care about prison, or police, or dependents.
I wish you luck whatever you decide and you have an excellent record.
