    English Corrections

    Well, here goes....

I realize that the forums are for entertainment, but would they not be more entertaining if people used the correct words in their posts?

So I’m anal. I have certainly lowered my standards of writing, just so I wouldn’t go nuts trying to mentally correct everything I read.

This thread could serve as an online thesaurus. I’ll start with a few common ones, and each of you chime in with some grammatical mistakes that bug you.

(Big Green, I’m counting on you for a post worthy of publishing.)

These are some easy ones that drive me nuts…

    There…a place

    Their…people’s possessions

    They’re…they are

    Here…under your ass…right here…a place

    Hear…with your ears…auditory

    On…not off

    Own…possession

    Plenty more to come.

Feel free to add your own.

A personal pet peeve of mine:

Farther implies actual physical distance while further denotes an abstract such as time. It wouldn't both me very much save for the fact that the word "FAR" is in the word that indicates actual distance and "far" is the word of choice to indicate such. Unless you're from some place like, oh, i don't know....Texas, you wouldn't say "the store is pretty fur away".

Actually, the spelling on that one is thu...but you are right....that is primarily used when speaking about a drunk. You might say, "yeah that guys is ****ed up...he's thu." That just means he is too drunk to make it to be "through," but you gave him the "thu," anyway.

Lie 1 - to tell a fib "I will not lie to her"
Lied - the past tense of Lie 1 "He lied to her"

Lie 2 - the present tense of lay "Our sympathies lie with the plaintiff."
Lay - the past tense of Lie 2 "Dirty dishes lay on the table"

    Layed? NOT A REAL WORD!

Here's one I never remember. If you were coming up to a fork in the road and you veered to the right which would you use?

_____ right at the fork in the road

    Bear
    Bare
    Bayer
    Bayr
    Barr
    Baar

If I might be so bold Big Green, "Far" or as you pronouce it "Fur" isn't used in the south, not even Texas for that matter. "Pert Neer" would be the correct term used to denote distance.

Man 1 (Northern...if you care to know): I'm looking for the pet store?
Man 2 (You know): Pert near on top of it, it's right around the corner.

Man 1: How far to Dallas?
Man 2: You'll Pert near drive forever before you find that place, why you want to go there anyway?

"the store is pretty fur away" would actually be pronounced " Tha stor is pert neer ah way" ............just hepin where I can bro. hahahahahha

You know I'll bet I get this wrong. Seriously I suck at this....I'm guessing bare? However in southern dialect it would be without a doubt "barr".

"Quick!! Barr right after the stop sign."

Yes. I definately am in agreement with you on this subject. I am always seeing people who do not know the difference between "too" and "to." Little basic mistakes in grammar like are brutal.

Man as many forums as I answer, sometimes I do make many mistakes. But if I spent half the time checking for my mistakes, the less info I could get and give from this board. Just my opinion. But is funny to think about throw. I mean through. LMAO.

Well, if you think about it Rod, I am sure you have heard of taking a "bearing."
That is about direction. As is bearing to the right at the fork.

Thanks Swellin. Every time I get it straight I just forget it. It's not something you use often enough to ingrain into your memory.

Rudy...are you trying to become Hoss II: The Sequel? The 2nd most annoying poster in the history of internet message boards?
