KIEV, Ukraine (Jan. 22) - Ukraine's youngest ever mother on record, an 11-year-old girl, has given birth to a healthy baby boy weighing 8.4 pounds, a newspaper reported Thursday.

Surgeons at hospital No. 5 in the eastern city of Kharkiv delivered the infant by Caesarean section on Tuesday, the Fakty daily said, citing the unidentified mother's doctor, Valentyn Gryshchenko.

Both mother and son are in good health, but will remain in the hospital under observation for a week.

The family of the sixth-grader refused to stop the pregnancy and "put everything in the hands of fate," Gryshchenko was quoted as saying.

The boy is expected to live at home with his mother and grandmother.

The newborn's alleged father is a 26-year-old neighbor who fled fearing criminal charges when he learned of the girl's pregnancy, Fakty said. If convicted of having sexual relations with a minor, the father faces a maximum prison sentence of three years.

Max three years for having sex with an 11 year old? I think the alleged should be sentenced to the victims age, 10 fold. So 110 years.

I don't agree with that, it should be 100 years minus the victims age. It would suck if someone raped a 2 year old and only got 20.

Personally i think that rape and murder should carry sentences of life in solitary. The more severe we make the punishments to violent crimes, the less likely they are to happen.

Also, when I was in grade school, there were several pregnant girls at school that were 13-14 years old. It's pretty common around here.

Whether it was okay or not in the past, just the fact that the 26 year old did do that OBVIOUSLY shows he is messed in the head. At 11, she's barely hitting puberty. These people are just messed in the head. In man cases they probably just can't control themselves, no will power. I mean, if he was sane, and wanted to hit someone young, he'd go and get some 18 year old prostitute. But that's not the case, it's basically being a pedaphile and wut not. Nice post. Very valid point. However, the simple fact that they have a punishment available for this type of activity means that it is not condoned.

It is very easy to be so ethnocentric that you forget about the taboos of our world being commonplace events in other's.

It does not excuse the guy...he feared prosecution...he fled...he knew it was wrong...the "state" offers penalties for such actions....the "state" feels it is wrong.
