Here i am sitting in my back yard basking in the south Florida sun... listening to mp3's and surfing the web. Does anyone else enjoy wireless like me? Or am i the only nerd here

It's the best I installed a wireless hub at each firehouse and at home, now I don't have to fight over the computers any more. It's awesome.

Sitting on my couch with my laptop

and my kid is on his machine in his room now... all wireless.

I must be an uber-nerd when it comes to wireless, I enjoy war-driving all the time (when on the road for work, I "borrow" a connection off stupid peoples wireless hubs so I can log onto the net almost anywhere).

Remember to turn on the WEP encryption on your wireless hub if you want to keep people like me out

802.11b for me... 10base is more than fast enough for sharing a net connection, printer or listening to MP3's from my main machine. 802.11g justn't isn't worth the $ for my use.

He he he Orinoco Silver 802.11b card here with 3 external antennas (1 magnetic omni, 1 cantenna, 1 homebrew colinear).

There aren't too many places where I can't geta connection on the road.

1 17", 1 12" and 1 15" Aluminum Powerbooks, 1 Toshiba laptop all wireless 802.11g. Also have a Palm Tungsten C that's wireless.

I also put wireless cards in all of our desktops so we don't have wires running all of the place.

How are you liking your Powerbook? Which model do you have? I'm going to sell my 17". I'm waiting for a G5 17" Powerbook to come out.

You're better off doing MAC address filtering to protect your network than WEP encryption. WEP slows down your network because the password is transmitted along with every byte of data. MAC address filtering only allows the MAC addresses you enter to access your network. Also turn off broadcast SSID.

I'm using 802.11g. If you copy large amounts of data it's worth the extra cost. I have a DVR that's wireless so I'm moving several Gigs worth of data across the network.

i can live with the performance hit from the WEP packets. I also keep DHCP off and use non standard static IP addresses. I also regularely change the WEP keys.

Remember, I am a wardriver... getting into other peoples wireless toys is my hobby, keeping my kind out was my first priority

I'm a member of http://www.nycwireless.net/ Our goal is to have open wireless access across the city. I think people should leave their networks open unless they have sensitive data they need to protect. I have two apartments and only one is protected. The other, I'm never really there much so I leave the network open for others to use.

There's wireless connection all over my school...so when i'm there, i'm on wireless...

it's quite possibly the best and worst thing that they've provided. best for obvious reasons, worst because it makes it very easy to get "distracted" during lectures...

I love wireless! I've got mixed 10/100/gig-e/802.11b/g network running. I have a linksys 802.11b/g router and a cisco 350 bridge. Wireless segment is authenticated via WPA Radius and using TKIP for the encryption algorithm. Cisco Pix 515 with an adsl nic running 3des linked up in a 4 way vpn spoke. OpenBSD running squid proxy/DHCP/Bind9 another OpenBSD box runing snort IDS. Also, Windows 2k3 Enterprise Ed. acting as my print/file/ftp/web/wins server. In fact, I have so much crap on my network I will be taking applications because I need to hire a Network Administrator just to keep things running smoothly.

Job description - adding removing users, updating my website, ftp, and watching my firewall logs for hack attempts. Only beautiful women between the ages of 19-25 need apply. Ladies, don't worry if you don't feel fully qualified I will provide "technical training". Thanks!

Using a laptop and an 802.11x wireless networm card to look for unprotected or open Wireless Networks.

There are tons of them as most people basically install their wireless networks "out of the box" and never turn on any types of protection.... best case scenario, they get people like me who "borrow" their internet bandwidth, worse case scenario they get hackers who go wreck havoc in their machine.

What do you mean a brick? It's an older Toshiba (Celery-700) which is all I need to wardrive.

Compared to my brand new work laptop or my fathers brand new Compaq it's really tiny.

I could wardrive with an Ipaq, but I'm a palm man myself... no winCE for me!

I did not buy a laptop for this very reason. I figured everyone who did bring one to lecture would spend the majority of their time surfing or working on other classwork while the prof is speaking. I didn't want to be in that camp. However, I'm happy many others do bring their laptops to lecture as I now have some entertainment during boring lectures cause these guys play games a lot.

I mean the size and thickness of your laptop. That's one of the things I hate about PC laptops vs PowerBooks. I have everything built in my 17" including a DVD burner and the thickness is only 1" with the lid closed. The same goes for my 15" and 12". All have built in DVD burners without sacrificing thickness.

Ah yes I see...

I have to admit powerbooks are nice... but I am not much of a mac person... but still... it would be nice to run Premiere for my DV movie editing... (alas I have a kid to feed and clothe... darn kids (and powerbooks!) are expensive! who knew!) I kind of "settle" for older cheaper computer toys...

But heck, I still have fun with them! (and nothing beats playing Rogue-Spear or UT against my kid on our home network!)
