Calling all club Bouncers.
I'm looking to take in a few extra dollars. I thought to myself that being a bouncer would be a fun and easy job. I'm 6'3" 270, so I figure it should be easy to find a job. Any helpful hints as to where to start looking, how to "approach" for the job, and what is the going rate to ask for.

If this is your first trip around the block (I'm making this assumption because you are asking) you will likely not get anything more than the going local chump rate. Just go and talk to some club managers and make sure they understand you have a cool head and don't fly off the handle when somebody insults you. Where not to work? Easy, avoid clubs where you don't fit in as a customer. If you wouldn't set foot in the place on your own time don't work there. I wouldn't wanna be the only Indian bouncing at a redneck cowboy bar.....would you?

I'm not a bouncer, but I'm sure you can just go to any club and ask if they're hiring. Rates are going to vary depending on how popular the club is.

Yeah chump rate is what they pay any newbie. I dunno about your area but where I am chump rate ranges from $8-10 an hour. Usually it is around minimum wage, but local factors would be the determinant.
Worth considering:
1) have you played this game b4?
2) why do you want to work the job?
3) is the scene violent where you live?
4) you have good health and safety coverage?
5) do you know anybody else in the club you wish to work? I would not want to work naked in any club. Working naked means you don't know anyone in the club so you are essentially on your own until you earn the trust of others because you have no way of knowing if a stranger really has your back.

bounce bounce bounce
Ive bounced for 7 years. Ive seen alot of blowed up bit*h boys work the job for the sole purpose of getting laid. If I were to bounce again I would not go naked as described above.Even if an easy door dont go alone. Ask yourself what your going to do when some chic smack the hell out of you and kicks you in the balls after you pull her boyfriend off of her for beating her a$$.
Thats always fun !
If your answer to the above question is count to ten and escort her outside then your in the wrong field, find a kiddy club !

You need a good temperment and a lot of patience. If you have never done it before I would ask to hangout and observe some night that you don't have anything to do and watch what kind of crap you are going to be dealing with. The guys are usually not the biggest problem especially since you are a big boy most of the guys won't start **** with you just because of your size. It is the girls that are hell. Ones that get sloppy drunk and don't listen to anyone, then you have to pull her ass outside and her punkass boyfriend jumps you from behind. Closing time is the worst though. When the lights come on and you are trying to get all of the drunk idiots to finish their drinks and get out. I got to the point where I would walk around and tell them one time and then on the second go around if they were still there and still had a drink in their hand I would just knock it out of their hands. Some will try to start **** but most will just leave. Good luck and make sure you take your prozac,

This a alot of good stuff guys. The one thing I forgot to think about was the fighting women. I have never hurt a women and that is something I need to consider. Everything else seems like a walk in the park. I have a cool temper even when the wife is drunk and screaming at me. I guess it has to do with the last 12 years of martial arts and getting a better control over my reactions. Thanks again.

i get the women by the hair and nicely lead them out, if they keep resisting, give it a little twist. women are by far the toughest to get out!

Oh yeah, Bouncer and the other boys brought up one of the more dreaded situations....I totally forgot about it. On hitting women.....I don't descriminate, a threat is a threat, plain and simple. I have had some hairy incidents with broads.....some of these gals are just plain mean. So be sure to convince yourself that you will have no problem giving a female the same treatment you would give a dude in the same circumstances.

That will something new for me. I have always been afraid to hit a women because of my power. I'm not trying to be arogant, but I have seen what I can do to a man in the ring and it scares me to think of hitting a women. I think I'll just get them in an ole preztel hold. Then again a dike maybe a different story.

I bartend at night and bouncers get paid 80-100 bucks a night. I've also went to battle beside em' outside the club it can be a sticky gig. One bouncer I know just lives by this guideline " If you have to haul a chic out always remeber to copa feel "

Good advice here, the short time ive worked i can say a cool head and knowing someone already in the place helps alot (to get the job). As for getting to know your partners, nothing makes you tighter then a good brawl.
As for fighting a woman...depends, if i could just throw her on the ground and cuff her i would, but if she kicked me in the balls i would throw her true the glas doors.
BBB - Women do bit*h alot when you tell them to leave eh? insane sometimes!

This one'e easy bro, just pull out the creepy guy routine and hit on em......they'll leave pronto. Tho you need to exercise caution becuase you don't wanna try this with fugly chicks, you might get an offer you'll hafta refuse.

Well guys, it's been a couple of months of being a doorman (that's what they call it know) and I have been loving it. I did go in naked but I brought a buddy in with me. I have a really cool head and the managers loves it because we do have a few hot heads as doorman. These guys drool when something is going down. Example.....there were two girls throwing gang signs back and forth during a Britney Spears song (don't pee on yourself yet) and I was the first doorman on the sceen. Mind you there were already 2 cops trying to get the girls under control. And out of nowhere I get run over by 2 of the other hot heads and they start grabbing there boys friends and dragging them out the door.
Anyways, I haven't had to get rough with anyone yet and I'm not looking forward to it. I've been in the martial arts for the last 13 years, so it's not a big deal for me to be in a fight. I have had some words with customers outside after I had to ask them to leave, but I kept my cool. I really enjoy it. The people at the bar are good. Collected about 20 fakes so far at the door. I love the look on some of there faces when I tell them they aren't getting it back.
Thanks again for all the advice. I'll keep you posted on anything worth a good laugh.

Funny story. Sounds like you're loving the social attmosphere. Does the age demo change from days of the week? Dance club? Weekends are probably where the fun begins!

Think of it as just a job. Try not to take **** personal, more than likely you will run into these people outside the club. Strength in numbers to bro, if you have a good crew take out all the troublemakers and don't let those idiots back in EVER. Some guys are just total assholes when they drink. Make sure you collect the cover charge also, if some of that accidentally slipped into your pocket they wouldn't miss it if it is a big club.

Bro bouncing seems hard as hell--beating the sh*t outta doods is one thing...but I give you mad credit for dealing with sloppy broads. Like people say it's more than just standing around looking the part--you are security and it takes a lot of responsibility.
Tending is a lot easier in my opinion and you can bullsh*t with a sh*tload of people by the end of the night...There's a lot of trash to deal with at the same time (afterall, you can't choose your customers)... but it does always make for an interesting night.
Best of luck on the new job.Last edited by Hooligan; 06-28-2004 at 03:48 PM.

After you have proven yourself and been around long enough to be one of the more senior guys, ask your manager/boss for a cut. Doorman tipout, however it is done at a particular club, is standard practice in the industry.

The pay is crap but generally speaking, the girls are alot less standoffish with the bouncers vs. the partons. it's alot easier to get them past that snotiness that alot of them have. For some reason they all think the bouncers are "safe" and are more prone to hooking up with you. At least that has been my experience when I bounce...easy way to meet girls...
