aspirating is always a must! the whole point is to do a intamuscular injection, not intravenous.

See how easy it is to try to aspirate with a lat or trap shot!! Not easy at all. And through all the, and i mean literally hundreds of shots without aspirating not ONCE have i killed myself or wound up in the hospital! Like i said before how many clinics or docs aspirate? I have not been to one yet.

Just cause that has worked for YOU, I definately would NOT encourage that crap. It is ALWAYS better to aspirate and be safe then to save the 5 secs and NOT aspirate. IMO

I've given myself some pretty tricky shots and I've always been able to aspirate . It's not like it costs you any more then 5 seconds of your time. And although I've never injected into a vein, I have near one I nicked, and it was anything but fun. *cough*hack*cough*

Tell me one experience where a doc or clinic had aspirated when they had given YOU a shot of some sort, i have not heard of one that does or ever did. My doc who treats and consoles BB's had told me that in 29 ys that he's been practicing he had NEVER aspirated one patient not because he knows where the veins are it's just "not necessary" in his words!! Now you can go on about this forever but please drop all that "you can die s h i t"!! I would really like a REAL med doc to post on here his thoughts than i'll shut the **** up.

I've never said that you can die (not really sure I believe that one myself), but I will say that it does not in any way feel good (see above post).

Oh, I've read them. Still not sure I believe that you'll die from it. But some juice making it's way into a vein sure feels bad, and not feeling like that (or worse then that *shudder*) is worth the time it takes me to aspirate .

I think it's a good overall idea to give to the newbies, but if someone doesn't I wont be praying for them.

Really? Then I wouldn't want to go to your docs.....all of them where I am do. If you can reach the plunger to inject, you should be able to aspirate ....You don't have to pull back hardly at all...you get blood return very quick.

    "Aspiration

Although aspiration is no longer recommended for SC injections, it should be practised in IM injections. If a needle is mistakenly placed in a blood vessel, the drug may be given intravenously by mistake and could cause an embolus as a result of the chemical components of the drug. Following insertion into the muscle, aspiration should be maintained for several seconds to allow blood to appear, especially if a narrow bore needle is used (Torrance 1989a). if blood is aspirated, the syringe should be discarded and a fresh drug prepared. If no blood appears, proceed to inject at a rate of approximately 1 ml every ten seconds. This may seem slow, but it allows time for the muscle fibres to expand and absorb the solution. There should also be a ten second wait before withdrawal of the needle, to allow the medication to diffuse into the muscle before the needle is finally withdrawn. If there is seepage from the site, slight pressure using a gauze swab can be applied. A small plaster may be required at the site. Massage of the site should be discouraged because it may cause the drug to leak from the needle entry site and irritate local tissues (Beyea and Nicholl 1995). "

Just so you know, most medical journals, this one included, are not available to the public for free.

Most doctor journals will not talk about this, as injections are a nurse's typical job, thus it is important for nurses to know and teach each other.

From The New England Journal Of Medicine: Medline Abstract

"Administering injections is an activity inherent to nursing practice. A critical review of nursing fundamentals texts found that the "proper" procedure was often non-researched based and reflected myths, traditions, and out-of-date recommendations regarding the technique."

Just so you know this and the most other med journals are available online.

So you say that all schools of nursing must operate on myths and preconceived notions, as there is obviously no medical reasoning for this.

The CDC and AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) does state that it is a practice upholded by many experts, but that there is no data to support this one way or the other; however, if you aspirate and blood is found, then withdraw and start again.....so, why start over if it doesn't matter? http://www.pkids.org/admim.pdf

That said, I have better things to do, and more respect for these boards to get in a pissing match with you.....some say yes, some no...you will do as you want...however, I will continue to tell ppl to aspirate as IMO it is a good practice to get into.

The only thing i'm saying is that everyday MILLIONS of ppl recieve injections in developed and developing countries where nurses, docs, clinics do not aspirate and if the practice was as dangerous as some stipulate there would be tens or hundreds of thousands of complications or deaths recorded and the practice would certainly stop. And I'M not saying the nursing practice opreates on myths and traditions it comes from one of the most prestigious and followed med journals. So God...you can get in a pissing match with them.
