i met a fellow on a messege board and he says he makes frequent trips to Mexico. he said he could pick me up some gear. although i am sketchy about this, i think i am going to follow through with it. what would you do????

unless your only buying like 200 worth of gear i wouldn't dare give my money to some guy with no back up. Heck i could tell you that i was going to mexico and say give me some money and i will pick you up some shit, and i would by $$ richer

a little common sense would do you good here. number one you shouldnt trust anybody anyway. you are talking about illegal shit that violates plenty of regulations... to keep it simple, stick around, talk to the moderators, use references but NEVER trust anyone.
