Toxicity
Niacin toxicity is rarely observed at doses generally consumed. Administration of pharmacological doses of nicotinic acid (1-2 g three times a day) is used in treatment of high blood cholesterol. At this level of intake, histamine release may be triggered resulting in flushing of the skin which can be harmful to patients with asthma or peptic ulcer disease. Niacin also promotes hepatic toxicity when consumed at high doses found in some supplements.
The upper limit of safety for niacin established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine is 35 mg daily for adults. Niacin Tolerable Upper Intake Levels

There are two types of Niacin you can buy...... flushing type wiil make you all red and blotchy. You will also itch from it as well. The non-flushing is just that non-flushing so it doesn't bring blood to the surface.Quote:

I use B-3 to help boost HDL levels. If you start with a low dose (100 mg) and work up slowly you can minimize the flush. I have read some reports that indicate reg B-3 (the flushing kind) is more effective for hdl levels, but this could be just opinion. I take 1,000 mg / day split into 2 500 doses. Another hint - if you want to minimize the flush - take (1) std (325mg) aspirin 1/2 hour before the b-3.
Do you take it for hdl levels or the flushing, etc?Quote:

I actually did this the other day thinking the same thing about the vascularity. I split a 250 mg tab in half and took it with some NO2. I noticed it within 15 minutes...Pretty cool stuff.

Niacin is one of the few drugs that can actually raise HDL - most other cholesterol drugs just lower LDL. In my case I have genetically low HDL, so I take 500mg of niacin at night and 500mg of non-flushing niacin in the morning. There's some debate about which type of niacin is best for raising HDL. Most doctors believe that the flushing type is more effective. As CapnZ mentioned, taking aspirin before the niacin will reduce the flushing.
