Ten People Indicted, Accused Of Illegal Drug Distribution

(San Diego, CA) -- A two-year investigation focused on Laboratorios Ttokkyo, a pharmaceutical manufacturing firm in Morelos, Mexico, and Granero de Oro, a Tijuana-based veterinary business, lead to the indictment of ten people, accused of helping peddle Mexican-made ketamine that's sometimes used as a club and date rape drug, in this country. Jorge Chevreuil Bravo, who owns Granero de Oro, and Dr. Francisco Molina, the owner of Laboratorios Ttokkyo, are among those charged. According to the indictment, the Bravo-Molina organization solicited orders for ketamine and other pharmaceuticals from U.S. customers and distributors through a Web site.

This was in the LA paper ...

Breakup of drug ring traced back to Simi tip
    By Grace Lee, Staff Writer

A tip to Simi Valley police two years ago has led to the dismantling of North America's largest illegal producer and distributor of the club drug known as "Special K," authorities said Wednesday.

Sweeping raids in Mexico and the United States have led to the arrest of seven men responsible for almost 80 percent of the drug's illegal distribution in the country, and the largest seizure ever of the drug ketamine, officials said.

"This is a perfect example of how a tip can mushroom into a major investigation," said Simi Valley Police Chief Randy Adams.

"It's pretty amazing to be able to work on this case and help dismantle an international organization, from suppliers on the street to all the way up to manufacturers in Mexico."

Ketamine, known as Special K or "Vitamin K," is a veterinary tranquilizer and popular club drug. It is related to PCP and can be used as a date-rape drug, Adams said.

Two years ago, information about illegal steroids being sold in the city's health clubs put police on the trail of a local seller, who also distributed Special K, Adams said.

At a new conference Wednesday in San Diego, Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Coughlin announced that investigators had cracked the global production and distribution ring and confiscated nearly 200,000 vials of ketamine from a veterinary facility in Tijuana.

Adams said that in Simi Valley, police seized hundreds of vials of ketamine and illegal steroids and $34,000 in cash. Each vial contains 10 dosages, and each dosage sells for $20 on the street.

A lab based in Mexico was taking orders over the Internet and referring orders to the veterinary store, which would supply dealers in the United States, Adams said.

On Sept. 17, authorities arrested two men they said are leaders of the drug ring, Jorge Chevreuil Bravo, who is the owner of Granero de Oro, a Tijuana-based veterinary business and distributor, and Dr. Francisco Molina, owner of Laboratorios Ttokkyo, a pharmaceutical manufacturing firm in Morelos, Mexico. They were being held in Miami.

Three others are being sought in Mexico and San Diego.

In all, authorities issued 10 indictments and made seven arrests and conducted raids in New York, Orlando, Philadelphia and San Diego.

Authorities refused to identify the Simi Valley drug suspect and the names of the clubs involved.

"I'm pretty confident with the arrests and seizures in Simi Valley two years ago that we shut the door (to ketamine sales) at that time," Adams said. "Now the entire network is thwarted and dismantled with all the arrests, and I feel confident the door's been shut in the rest of the country."

For the past four years, Simi Valley has been named safest city in the nation among cities with more than 100,000 residents, reporting the fewest crimes for cities of that size.
