Looking for input for an old dude

I'm 48 y/o and weigh 240 lbs. I do endurance based military style events like carry heavy stuff for anywhere from 12 - 55 hours by and cover 15 to 70 miles during these events. I train for this a lot and have been for years. When I was 25 y/o I was 205 and solid.

I have a graduate degree in exercise is physiology and use this to guide how I train.

I've really cleaned my diet over the last year. I consume 1500cals on average. Take in at least 125g of protein daily. Eat a lot of plants and very low to no starchy carbs. Drink a beer or two a week as a luxury and that is my cheat. But overall I eat very clean.

My wt remains unchanged. I'm looking to lean out and lose body fat. I want to be able to recover faster as it has gotten hard to recover as I've gotten older. I do about 40 miles a week between walking, running, rucking 4-5x a week. Do body wt exercises 3x week. Swim 1x week. Lift 1-2x a week.

Age has really not done my body good with mainly weight and recovery time.

I'm thinking doing low dose Primo or Sustanon .... like 100mg a week on day 1. And doing doing 250IU HCG day 6 and 7 each.

    Any input?

I think we need to work on some things. Having a grad degree ex phys I think you see where I am going to go with some of this.

    1. The diet is way to low on Kcals, your BMR Should roughly be around 2200kcals. This has a two fold effect. One it’s limiting your recover like you have mentioned and secondly it’s putting your body into starvation mode and retarding your metabolism. I get what your trying to do, be at a 700 kcal deficit every day, so your set up to lose 1lbs or fat a week, in theory. The problem is when you add in your daily activity and excercise session basically your TDEE, your calorie deficient can be well over 1k on training days. You can’t recover well in that environment.

If you remember, eating and exercise are the only two natural ways to increase your metabolic rate. Smaller meals per day will help ignite the fire if you will and prevent insulin peaks and valleys. I think I would actually raise up your calories to about 2000 kcals a day or around that range. It’s very hard to maintain long term that type of restrictive diet. You might also look into intermittent fasting, where you only eat in day a 6-8 hour window. That is very popular for weight loss Now and a lot of bodybuilders employ this technique.

    2. If your going to take any T in a Lower dosage I wouldn’t do sust simple because it has short and medium length eaters and you would need to pin EOD to keep your hormones level. Also if it were me, I would get my baseline levels tested before I start. 100mg maybe to low to give you any type of boost. I’ll differ commenting further in that aspect as there are members here better qualified to answer that specific TRT question.

Hope that is helpful! And welcome to the board again

I hear you in the cal input. It's been a slow progressive decline down to the 1500. I started this at around 2000 and gained fat. So it's been a confusing process. My doctor tells me work harder and eat less but won't do blood work. I belong to a large managed care outfit so it's a lost cause.

I'm doing blood work at a private lab based on some other reading I have done. So I agree with you and understand what you are saying.

Intermittent fasting...I've been reading on this as well.

Also thanks for the input. Trying gather as much info as possible before I pull the trigger on this.

If you are 240 lbs and gain weight on 2000 calories while doing 40 hours a week weighted cardio....there is an issue in your body. Blood work might not directly expose the issue but there is an issue no matter what age you are. Labwork first.

Intermittent fasting does not work as a diet. It is an aide to raise IGF-1. IGF-1 is one of the major items that directly impact the body for muscle growth and use of fat for energy. Your thyroid can be on track but if IGF-1 is not where it should be...your results will blow. IGF-1 is directly impacted via HGH and "IGF" injections. You are not a hard core lifter so HGH would be something to consider. IGF injections are not what they used to be due to sourcing.

If your test level is acceptable dont mess with supplementing it. Remember free test is the reading that matters. You need total Test and SHBG test to calculate free. The only accurate free test reading directly is saliva.

I am in your age range. I can attest Testosterone and HGH working in the body can vault you beyond your dreams if your diet can sustain the growth.

Thanks for the info, Chicagotarsier. I'm headed in the lab tomorrow for blood draw. I am obsessed with getting this dialed. I've been dealing with since I gained 45 pounds in 2 months about a year ago. I do not have a goal of getting huge; I just want to carry heavy sh*t for days like always have.

Unckle, you are certainly not old! And welcome to the forum!

I would get a thyroid panel for sure. You're also likely a candidate for TRT with late-onset hypogonadism.

Best of luck to you and please keep us posted on your progress and findings.

    Have a powerful day.
