    Busted!

I was arrested the other day for alot of shit. They did not take my computer but I am worried that they may come back for it. If I just delete emails and web address's is that enough? I work on a Mac. Do have have to reinstall the system software?

I believe you do have to reinstall. I think they can get at just about anything on your computer, even if it has been deleted and refragged, unless it has been overwritten. I guess it depends on how serious they are about finding whatever they are looking for. Good luck.

Dude, if you're that concerned you better get yourself some disk-scrubbing software. Here's a link to one for Macs. I'd go get it right now.

Just make sure that you get software with the ability to erase index.dat files. Just erasing temporary files won't do it. Or, you could bust open the back of your computer and swap hard drives. Then just reprogram all of your software onto the new drive. Does anyone know the code that you type into DOS and it completely unninstalls everything and cleans the hard drive?

    format c:
    fdisk
put in a win 98 disk
    at the promtp type fdisk
    blow out the partions
and and the volumes as well.
    This is a temp fix
but a good cop hacker can still find the files unless you use a scrubber like they said up above or do a low level format( putting 1;s and 0's to the hdd

Just smash it. Don't take it to a friends house, it will just drag them into it, and make your situation worse, and complicate the relationship.

    setup

I was setup from someone that bought from me. I am more concerned about the internet. If I delete my browser, then reinstall the browser would that take care of my links and e-mails? I was not bustd for buying anything over the internet, but I told them that I had ordered stuff from over seas. What about book marks, if I delete them, can they still be found?

uninstalling and reinstalling your webbrowser will do absolutely nothing. get the disk scrubbing software or if you dont think you can handle that take out the harddrive and throw it away then reinstall on a new one.

Bad move bro...even if they catch you with the goods, do not tell them anything, you just admitted to them that you knowingly imported a controlled substance.....GET YOURSELF AN ATTORNEY!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely, talk to a lawyer first -it seems to me that using software to scrub your hard drive, even though it may well make it impossible to find any incriminating info from it in the future, could be considered destroying evidence, which may only get you into more trouble. A lawyer would be able to tell you if it's a good idea or not.

    Good luck!!!

I agree with smashing the harddrive and getting a new one. Just spend the coin on a new HD and even if you don't want to smash your old one, keep it hidden...but WELL hidden somewhere where you won't forget about it...but where no one can find it.

By the way, I dont suppose that you would be using THE SAME COMPUTER right now would you? Didn't the FBI just get their little legislation passed to have the legal right to moniter citizen's personal computers? You know, just a thought...could be nothing.

A lot of ignorant advice coming your way...although genuine in their wish to help you.

No amount of software, scrubbing, or defragging will eliminate what's on your harddrive. It is very easy to run a computer forensic audit on your computer and pull up everything you've tried to hide. Spend a $100 bucks and install a new HD.

The other, destroy. Don't throw it away. Some wino, somewhere, will hand it in and you're fucked. Don't be caught in a situation where you've attempted to destroy evidence.

    Oh...and get a good lawyer.

I would hide my comp before I destroy it unless it is like a 900 processor or slower.
Take it to a friends house and have him take it to his friends house later on. Get it when you are out of jail. If they didnt take it yet then they arent putting that much effort into it.

ONE MORE THING. Ask a mod to delete ALL of your posts and threads on ALL the boards you go to. Have them delete your member name also.
Get rid of any papers that have your passwords on them if you are super paranoid.

What you could do is purchase a new HDD. Not sure about the mac's but I have a bay under my cd rom where I can inter-exchange my HDD. I would stash the old HDD at a trusted friends house, then install the new HDD.

    what about phone taps?

Does anyone know for a fact info on pnone taps. My house I am not worried about. But I do have a cell, but I have not been talking on that. However I do use my wifes. It is different number, but we get one bill that comes with my name on it. So can they just tap anything connected to my name? Also I do not believe they would have my wifes number unless they called the cell phone company and asked for all numbers connected to my name.

I don't know about phone taps, but if the cell phone bill is in your name, then its no different than using your own.
