As you guys probably know, I have some problems going on right now. Here is my post where you can read about them:

http://forums.steroid.com/showthread.php?t=231972

Here is my MRI report findings:

"There is moderate diffuse thickening of the entire right pectoralis major muscle compared to the left. There are moderatly to moderatly severe poorly-defined longitudinally-oriented linear regions of increased internal T2 signal intensity throughout the right pectoralis major muscle, lateral greater than medial, posterior greater than interior. There is evidence of poorly-defined deep soft tissue inflammation/edema interposed between the right pectoralis major and minor muscles. There is mild/moderate diffuse anterior subcutaneous inflammation/edema, most prominent overlying the inferior lateral margin of the right pectoralis major muscle. The right pectoralis minor muscle is normal in configuration and patterns of signal intensity. The limited evaluation of the left pectoralis major and minor muscles is unremarkable.

Impression:

1. There is evidence of a moderate to moderatly severe diffuse strain/intrasubstance tear throughout the right pectoralis major muscle, lateral greater than medial, posterior greater than anterior. There is mild/moderate superficial and deep soft tissue inflammation/edema overlying the right pectoralis major muscle as detailed above.

2. The right pectoralis mior muscle is intact, demonstrating normal configuration and patterns of signal intensity."

So what do you guys think of all this. Can someone please explain it to me. Am I gonna need surgery. I'm very nervous. My ortho doc is on vacation and won't be able to go over this report with me for another two weeks.

Someone please help.

My ortho doctor sent me for the MRI. The day after I got it taken, he got on a plane to go on vacaion. He is still on vacation. I won't be able to see him and go over the MRI and report until April 4. I picked up the MRI report from the place that gave me the MRI. The ortho doctor has not seen the MRI yet. However, his secretary called me this morning and said she faxed the MRI report to my doctor at his vacation spot. He read it and called her back. She than called me back and said the ortho doctor said that based on the report I have a strained pectoral major muscle that will not require surgery. He said that I will be alright, it's not a major tear, just a strain. I started PT yesterday and the therapist said I should be feeling back to normal by June.

My question, to you guys is, isn't a strain a tear? Based on reading this report, will I be alright by June if I go to PT 2-3 times a week, ice it, rest it, etc.

I hate to be a pain fellas, it's just I'm a nervous wreck over this. I want to one day be able to box again and right now I can't even throw a right hand without it killing me. I appreciate all your guys help so far. Is there anything else based on this report you guys can tell me?

Your right pectoral was strained, and now inflammed.

Are you icing the muscle?
Are you taking anything for the pain?

I'm icing it every 2 hours for 20 minutes, taking 800 mg. motrin 3 times a day, and I'm doing PT 2-3 times a week.

Ibuprofen is the way to go if its not upsetting your stomach.

Def. keep icing the inflamed area, and phys. therapy will def help.

Hopefully thE PT that is working with you works with more advanced therapy methods.

And as doc. said def. give it 6-8 weeks or until you feel fully recovered before you go back to training, and once you do resume training take it way easy for a while. I wouldnt worry about loosing size or musculature, bc muscle cells have incredible memory and you will eventually comeback stronger. Just give it time, GOOD LUCK.

Most ortho docs will tell you that the radiologists that read the MRIs don't always get it right. The radiologist give their impression, not necessarily wrong, but they aren't the ones that end up cutting into you. You need your ortho MD to view the films, as he'll only glance half-heartedly at the radiologists impression. It doesn't sound too severe however having any torn muscle no matter what degree is never a good thing. The PT is a good idea (though I am biased in that direction) and any anti-inflammatories will help. Doesn't your othopedist have a partner in his/her group that is seeing all the patients while they're on vacation? Could you go to them?

The thing I'm most worried about is this:

Right now I can't even throw an overhand right. If I do I'm in severe pain. I'm just concerned I will never be able to throw a decent right hand punch again, and seeing I want to get back into boxing, that's not a good thing. Have any boxers ever tore their pectoralis major and came back successfully?

It's only been a week since this injury occured, but I'm very nervous I won't be able to start boxing again by the summer.

dude its been a week! think about the muscles involved in throwing a solid right.

The pectoral muscle, both minor and major are primarily used in and pushing movement. I.e jab, overhands..ect. give it time. DO NOT PUT EXCESS AND UNECESSARY STRAIN ON THE MUSCLE, if you want it to heal.

Keep icing and follow proper rehab.guidelines.

You can try glutamine to help in some of the soreness. Keep your protein high to help nurse the injury and prevent muscle catabolism.

you can PM me if you have any more questions ill help you out as much as i can.
