When you guys do barbell upright rows do you bring the bar up to where the elbows and forearms are level to the ground like seen here:

Or do you bring it up higher, like to the chin? Which way is better for building your side delts? Which way is safer for your rotator cuffs?
I bring the bar to my upper chest

I have grown into the theory that less is more with this exercise and that jerking motions don't really help. In my experience, I take the bar to mid-chest height, hold for 1 second and drop. If I'm unable to hold, I'll get one more rep out and that's it. A typical set will go 8-14 reps x 3.
to my upper chest.. works fine for me.
at first this excersize killed my wrists though..

I dont worry so much as to how high I pull the bar but that I use my elbows to pull and not my wrist or forearms.
also I dont like using a bar cause of instability, I like to use a smith machine or rope attachment on a cable station and I lean back as I pull to emphasize the meddial deltoid.

wider grip works the medial delts.

I've seen guys do the smith machine and the bar sort of floats up for them, I'd prefer free barbell.
Do you notice this?

^^ ha ha, I know what you mean, modern smiths do glide up easy dont they, our smith is the old ass smith and the bar with hooks is HEAVY, the first time I went to do mil press Id use 135 during my working sets, on our smith all you needed was a quarter on each side to feel the same,
so no it dosent float, but rather sinks.
the reason I do them is because I like a controlled path, I usually do upright rows last and by this time my shoulders are shot, and im afraid to use free weights because of injury,
like I said before I like to lean back so a smith lets me do this,

DB upright rows with one arm at a time also work well to, you can really customize the movement to what works for you the best.
