It's used for contests or for photoshoots so you are not drowned out by the lights.
It takes a long time to apply it and you have to use several coats. I'd recommend NOT using this unless you absolutely have to for a show, as the smell is horrid, it stains everything you come in contact with, and when it peels/flakes off after a few days, you look like you have some middle-east flesh eating disease.

Pro-Tan is what I use for the stage, but w/all the crap I am going through come contest time, smelling bad and painting myself are the least of my worries. It's a great product for it's intended purpose, but if one is thinking they can apply this "just whenever" they wish to look tanned, it ain't gonna go down like that.
I do use Dream Tan for photoshoots. Takes me 15 mins to be as dark as a Brazilian porn star (minus the HIV), and it washes off in the shower w/soap and a loofah or similar type brush.
