ok now my hard drive quit workin

WD firewire / usb 2.0 external - 250 GB

drive spins fine. lights up. no cable will connect me to my pc(s) (laptop & dekstop)

used it just 2 days ago when i redid my parents computer. runnin XP everywhere.

any ideas ? even i'm stumped.....

i'm wonderin if i take the thing out of the case and pop it in my desktop if it'll work that way.....

this thing was 230 bucks and it's not even 6 months old. i think has a 1 year warranty, but i can't crack it open or i'll lose it.

do they make cases where you can install a hard drive to make it external ??

Yeah they do. Try dirtcheapdrives.com but stay away from Kahlon. They really jerked me around and their tech support people just ignore you. I upgraded from W98 and the old driver looks for a working copy of autoexec.bat and config.sys instead of mking entries to the registry. I emailed them over and over begging for a link for the driver. I will never buy anything from them again and I would cheerfully kick the CEO of that company's butt up between his shoulder blades if I ever met him.

If you are gonna be using more than one extra drive, consider buying an old puter to use just for a server for your home network. Install drives in the old beater instead of paying extra for the externals and having usb or firewire and power cables all over the place. Have two drives in your regular workstation... one for a working drive and one for backups. There are lots of backup tools around to automate the process so that you get a fresh backup of your drive every night while you sleep. If your backup drive is big enough, set it up with two partitions. Back up to one on odd days and backup to the other partition on even days. That way no matter what, you can go back a day to a working configuration and more importantly have those files you accidentally wiped with pgp or diskwipe.

no i need this drive b/c i carry it around with my laptop. it stores my porn, which probably can be put on my laptop hard drive - 60 gig. but more importantly, it stores my 75 xbox games that i have....

can't decide whether i wanna get a usb 2.0 only or one with firewire. my old one had firewire. it's only 14 more bucks. here's the one i'm lookin at :
