How does hooking up two hard drives work?
My original hard drive has a virus, so i took out an old hd from another pc and installed it as the master, and then unpplugged the cdrom to view the original hd. How do you make windows recognize it as another drive when it is hooked up as the slave. Basically, I want to use one for the ops files, and one as a big my documents storage bank.
Emachines t2642
Intel Celeron 2.6 ghz
256 ram
xp home
Thanks

Windows should automatically see it as another drive. If you have one set to master and one set to slave and the correct jumpers selected on your drives, you should be good to go.

try spyware doctor, i had a huge virus problem over the weekend. some bullshit site downloaded 211 viruses to my machine and froze my desktop properties. i had to dl the free version of that software then find a crack to upgrade it to the $30 version .
anway you need to set the primary hd to master and any secondary ones to slave. windows will auto dectect them. set the jumper to "ma"

Look at each hard disk. Somewhere on there it will tell you how to set the jumpers to make one the master and one the slave. Then you have to hook them up to the same cable. When you boot up, assuming you have Windows installed on the master drive, you should be able to see both drives in Windows Explorer.

i believe all the hard drives come set at CS (cable select) when you buy them. you can change it to master / slave or just leave it as cable select and the position you have it on the IDE cable will determine which is which.
when you buy a new hard drive (if you buy it with the kit and stuff) it'll have a layout of how to install it / jumper settings / etc.
but if you're still confused, PM me and i'll walk you through it. it's rather easy

there should be on the hard drive the jumper positions and what they are labled.. slave, master etc..
just pull off the jumper, make one the master, one the slave.. check the cable for the primary.. (that's the master)The answer to your every question

It's pretty simple, but if you don't feel comfortable doing it, just take it to a shop. It should be around $10.00 to get it installed.
