gain muscle while cutting?
This may be a dumb question but I was wondering if a guy my size would be able to gain muscle while cutting on this diet?
I'm 5'11, 160pds. Not sure of my bf% or how to check it but its just my chest, stomache and lower back where I have any and its not too much at that. I have a 4 pack right now so it cant be too high.
6:30am - cardio (hr 150-165)
8:00am – 1 ½ scoop protein, 1 teaspn flax seed oil
10:00am - 1 can of tuna, 1 handfull cashews
12:00pm - 1 chicken breast, 1 cup veggies, 1 tble spoon flax
3:00pm - 1 can of tuna, 1 handfull cashews
6:00pm - 2 chicken breasts, 1 teaspn flax seed oil
7:00pm - Heavy lifting mon-fri
PWO - 15-20min after workout - 2 scoops protein, 1 cup veggies, 1 cup rice
10:00pm - 2 scoops protein, 1 teaspn flax seed oil
I figured it out to be around 240-260 grams of protein. If I did up the protein around 300 would it be just as effective (for me) as a bulking diet would do for muscle?Last edited by bramabull; 05-20-2004 at 10:57 AM.

Just a couple of adjustments you might wanna make:
1) PWO should be a shake w/dextrose (2:1 ratio of carbs to protein), so lose the veggies and rice here and save them for your PPWO meal.
2) A teaspoon of flax doesn't add much fat to the meal (about 3.5 grams). At least a half tablespoon would probably be more sufficient. You need fat while cutting.
As for your other questions, maybe someone else can offer some insight?

Actually, I just looked at your original question again and for most people gaining muscle mass while cutting is unlikely. You have to decide on one or the other, because the goals of one are kind of at odds with the other. I'm not saying that it never happens for anyone, but I'd venture a guess that those who do gain mass while lowering bodyfat are those who have a higher bodyfat % to begin with, and haven't spent much time hitting the weights previously.
