Tuna Brand Differences
I'm sure this isn't news to anyone on here as everyone realizes the different brands of tuna have slightly different nutritional value but I didn't realize quite how big of a difference there was in some until this weekend.
I usually buy Polar White Albacore tuna, this weekend I asked my BF to pickup some tuna at the store, he bought StarKist Chunk Light. I was comparing the differences in the two and here's what I found, note that both cans of tuna are 6oz cans:
POLAR White Albacore
Serving Size: 2oz
Servings per container 3
Calories 70
Fat 0.5g
Total Carbs 0g
Protein 16g
STARKIST Chunk Light
Serving Size: 2oz
Servings per container 2.5
Calories 60
Fat 0.5g
Total Carbs 0g
Protein 13g
StarKist must add more water to their containers since there is less servings per can. So if you ate a whole can of each you would get 32.5g Protein with StarKist and 48g Protein with Polar... quite a difference.- Sweat plus sacrifice equals success. - Charlie Finley

albacore
is a different type of tuna. you're getting a higher quality white meat. (for example, there's also blue fin and yellow fin tuna ). albacore is also more expensive. you'll probrably notice albacore is also chunkier, while the other tuna is basically shredded.

Yeah you're right that its chunkier and the funny thing is Polar White Albacore costs less than the StarKist Chunk Light Something to do with name brand I guess.

Up here we have Clover Leaf.
The light chunk tuna, has 25g protein/ 100g, while the albacore tuna, of the same brand, has 27g/ 100g.
The albacore is twice the price though, however the taste, and consistency is much better with the albacore...

notice the ingriedients on the can. You would assume that it would just be tuna and water or tuna and oil but their is actually salt and celery and some other oils added in there.

Whatever is cheapest in bulk cases of 60 cans. It all still tastes like $hit after the 2 month mark.

I would use bumblebee tuna just because they claim they don't kill dolphins catching the tuna. Dolphins usually get caught in the nets that catch tuna and they die. I like dolphins.

Actually almost all tuna is dolphin safe nowadays, but the brand never makes a differance..when comparing apples to apples...(yellow fin to yellow fin, etc)...its the exact same thing...I toured a tuna packing plant and met the owners.......in the ocean its all the same..there are no brands..........and most of them dont catch their own...they buy it from fishing companies...........so no differance from brand to brand...but look at the net wt...some put in less to lower prices, and make seem cheaper.

MERCURY! There's a lot more mercury in solid white as compared to chunk light. If you eat a lot of solid white, get your blood checked for mercury levels.

I buy Polar at the grocery store for the White Albacore, but nothing beats the price of Sams club for Starkist Chunk light.
