    carbs in almonds

I know alot has been said about not combining carbs and fats togethter, but I notice that almonds and other nuts contain both carbs and fats. I also know that the carbs in almonds are fibrous carbs, but they are still carbs so the rule should apply. Right?

Almonds are great... efa plus something good when you just feel like snacking on something, and definatly better than chips!

High carbohydrate, low-fiber foods are what cause insulin spikes that can lead to fat storage. The negligible amount of carbs in almonds combined with their high fiber content makes an insulin spike highly unlikely.

Really the important thing to watch is the ECC (Effective Carb Count). The ECC is the total carbs minus the carb counts of ingredients that do not affect (or have very minimal effect on) blood sugar levels.

    Total Carbohydrates
    - Dietary Fiber
    - Sugar Alcohols
    - Gylcerine
    - Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate
    All Remaining Carbs = ECC

You won't often find Gylcerine or Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate listed under the total carbs so normally you will just need to remember to subtract Fiber & Sugar Alcohols to determine the Effective Carbs.

Great info. Thanks a bunch. If you at a meal that included a potato or some rice and you were still hungry, how long should you wait before snacking on a handful of almonds? I ask because of the overlapping of macros.

gastric emptying occurs about 1.5 to 2 hours so at least that much.

As well, if they are high GI carbs, aside from gastric emptying, the slin spike should subside where it would be safe to eat those at the 2.5 to 3 hour mark AFTER the carb meal(s).

I LOVE almonds!!! Anyone ever tried the tamari roasted almonds? They're awesome, and looking at the ingredients it seems it's like a light soy sauce/herb of some sort that is roasted into the almonds, and the nutrition facts read the same. Too good be true?

And what about cashews, they have a real high carb count for nuts, I've always been iffy on them...

Pistachios are good but kinda high in carbs though. For 1/3 cup of dry roasted ones they have 18g Fat, 11g Carbs, 4g Fiber (7 EC)
