    "Calorie Free" Sweetener?

    Just looking at my packets of "sugar substitute", Equal and Splenda.

    They both say "Calorie Free" Sweetener.

    What I don't understand is that the first two ingredients are Dextrose and Maltodextrin. How can that be calorie free and how can that be a sugar substitute when they are sugar?

    What am I missing?

    Calorie free does not mean 0 calories just like fat free does not mean 0 fat. It's a gimmick.

    No, it's not a gimmick.

    The dex/malto has been chemically altered so that your body does not absorb it and it does not affect insulin levels.

    is this fro real or sarcasm....though i do know personally that i consume a lot of splenda without any weight gain.

    I have read that Spenda works by having a chemical attached to the sugar that does not let your body absorb it.

    No study has ever indicated the Aspertame has caused cancer in a single person. In fact Duke University Medical Dept. published a long term study a year ago or so indicating this. Now some run into headaches when drinking diet sodas. The reason being is because it is an amino acid. Aminos attach to receptor sites in your brain however taking in aspertame in large quanities can cause them to take up too many receptor sites and not allow essential aminos to attach therefore causing head aches.

    this thread was last edited in jan but to add to the aspartame ..... this cause a stimulation of your brain to tell you that its sweet but actually aspartame is extremley nasty as well if you knowtice right after you drink something with aspartame and you put salty food in your mouth right away it wont taste the same because your brain still has that recepter being fooled....... aspartame can cause you to crave more sweets due to the fact that your brain gets stimulated with a sweet like substance but does not recieve the sugar like products from the food or drink.......

    The multi-billion dollar aspartame industry would like you believe that "aspartame kills" is an "urban legend" and that you'd have to drink 100 cans of diet soda a day to be harmed by aspartame. This is just simply not true. Their main claim is that the 3 components of aspartame are found in many natural foods and are therefore safe. This is kind of like saying carbon monoxide is safe because all it contains is carbon & oxygen, the same components of carbon dioxide. Methanol (wood alcohol), which makes up 10% of aspartame and is highly toxic (adult minimum lethal dose is 2 teaspoons), is also found in some fruits & vegetables like tomatoes. However, methanol is never found in natural foods without ethanol & pectin, its "antidotes" if you will (detailed facts below). Ethanol & pectin prevent methanol from being metabolized into formaldehyde (embalming fluid) & formic acid (same chemical as fire ant venom), both deadly toxins. An ethanol drip is even the standard emergency room treatment for methanol poisoning. Aspartame contains no ethanol or pectin, therefore the methanol is converted to formaldehyde and formic acid. Phenylalanine and aspartic acid, the other 2 components of aspartame, are amino acids found in natural foods but always as part of long chains of many different amino acids to form complex protein molecules that take humans 12 hours to gradually break down & assimilate. According to the doctors below, when consumed by themselves these 2 amino acids require no digestion and quickly enter the brain & central nervous system at abnormally high levels, overstimulating brain cells to death and causing many other health problems.

    "Pro" aspartame people point to industry sponsored short term tests, ignoring independant tests. They point to "reliable" health sites, organizations, foundations etc. that are sponsored, funded & fed "facts" by companies that profit from aspartame. And of course, the FDA approved it so "it must be safe", neglecting to mention that the FDA denied aspartame approval for over 8 years until the newly appointed FDA commissioner Arthur Hull Hayes overruled the final scientic review panel, approved aspartame, and then went to work for G.D. Searle's (initial owner of aspartame) public relations firm at $1,000 a day. Hayes has refused all interviews to discuss his actions. The FDA also urged Congress to prosecute G.D. Searle for "specific false statements or concealed facts" stemming from Searle's testing of aspartame. However, the 2 government lawyers assigned to the case decided against prosecuting G.D. Searle and then joined G.D. Searle's law firm! Even the National Soft Drink Assn. filed a strong protest letter (available below) in 1983 against the approval of aspartame for use in beverages, saying "aspartame is inherently, markedly and uniquely unstable in aqueous media." Also, the FDA still allows hydrogenated oils to be used, does that make them safe?

    -I have spent several days lecturing at the World Environment Conference on Aspartame marketed as NutraSweet, Equal and Spoonful. In the keynote address by the EPA, they announced that there was an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus, and they did not understand what toxin was causing this to be rampant across the United States. I explained that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.

    When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F; the wood alcohol in Aspartame converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. (Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants). The methanol toxicity mimics multiple sclerosis thus peoples were being diagnosed with having multiple sclerosis in error. The multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, where methanol toxicity is. In the case of systemic lupus, we are finding it has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. Also, with methanol toxicity, the victims usually drink three to four 12 oz. cans of them per day, some even more.

    In the case of systemic lupus, which is triggered by Aspartame, the victim usually does not know that the Aspartame is the culprit. The victim continues its use aggravating the lupus to such a degree, that sometimes it becomes life threatening. When we get people off the Aspartame, those with systemic lupus usually become symptomatic. Unfortunately, we cannot reverse this disease. On the other hand, in the case of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, (when in reality, the disease is methanol toxicity), most of the symptoms disappear. We have seen cases where their vision has returned and even their hearing has returned. This also applies to cases of tinnitus.

    During a lecture, I said,and quote,

    "If you are using Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc.) and you suffer from Fibromyalgia symptoms; spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision or memory loss, you probably have Aspartame disease."

    People were jumping up during the lecture saying, "I've got this. Is it reversible?" It is rampant. Some of the speakers at my lecture even were suffering from these symptoms. In one lecture attended by the Ambassador of Uganda, he told us that their sugar industry is adding Aspartame. He continued by saying that one of the industry leader's sons could no longer walk - due in part by product usage. We have a very serious problem. Even a stranger came up to Dr. Espisto (one of my speakers) and myself and said, "Could you tell me why so many people seem to be coming down with M.S.?" During a visit to a hospice, a nurse said that six of her friends who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with M.S. This is beyond coincidence. Here is the problem. There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame was included in 100 different products. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings, but to no avail. Nothing has been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets. Now there are over 5,000 products containing this chemical, and the PATENT HAS EXPIRED.

    At the time of this first hearing, people were going blind. The methanol in the Aspartame converts to formaldehyde in the retina of the eye. Formaldehyde is grouped in the same class of drugs as cyanide and arsenic - DEADLY POISONS! Unfortunately, it just takes longer to quietly kill, but it is killing people and causing all kinds of neurological problems.

    Aspartame changes the brain's chemistry. It is the reason for severe seizures. This drug changes the dopamine level in the brain. Imagine what this drug does to patients suffering from Parkinson's Disease. This drug also causes Birth Defects. There is absolutely no reason to take this product. It is NOT A DIET PRODUCT. The Congressional record said, "It makes you crave carbohydrates and will make you FAT." Dr. Roberts stated that when he got patients off Aspartame, their average weight loss was 19 pounds per person. The formaldehyde stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs.

    Aspartame is especially deadly for diabetics. All physicians know what wood alcohol will do to a diabetic. We find that physicians believe that they have patients with retinopathy, when in fact, it is caused by the Aspartame. The Aspartame keeps the blood sugar level out of control, causing many patients to go into a coma. Unfortunately, many have died. People were telling us at the Conference of the American college of Physicians, that they had relatives that switched from saccharin to an Aspartame product and how that relative had eventually gone into a coma. Their physicians could not get the blood sugar levels under control. Thus, the patients suffered acute memory loss and eventually coma and death.

    Memory loss is due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylanine are neurotoxic without the other amino acids found in protein. Thus it goes past the brain barrier and deteriorates the neurons of the brain. Dr. Russell Blaylock, neurosurgeon, said, "The ingredients stimulate the neurons of the brain to death, causing brain damage of varying degrees." Dr. Blaylock has written a book entitled, "EXVIROTOXINS : The Taste That Kills" (Health Press 800-643-2665). Dr. H.J. Roberts, diabetic specialist and world expert on Aspartame Poisoning has also written a book entitled, "Defense against Alzheimer's Disease" (800-814-9800). Dr. Roberts tells how Aspartame Poisoning is escalating Alzheimer's Disease and indeed it is. As the hospice nurse told me, women are being admitted at 30 years of age with Alzheimer's Disease. Dr. Blaylock and Dr. Roberts will be writing a position paper with some case histories and will post it on the Internet.

    According to the Conference of the American College of Physicians, "We are talking about a plague of neurological diseases caused by this deadly poison." Dr. Roberts realized what was happening when Aspartame was first marketed. He said, "his diabetic patients presented memory loss, confusion, and severe vision loss." At the Conference of American College of Physicians, doctors admitted that they did not know. They had wondered why seizures were rampant (the phenylaline in Aspartame breaks down the seizures threshold and depletes serotonin, which causes manic depression, panic attacks, rage and violence). Just possible antidote for this poison because they are experiencing so many problems in their country. This "poison" is now available in 90 plus countries worldwide.

    Fortunately, we had speakers and ambassadors at the Conference from different nations who have pledged their help. We ask you to help too. Copy this article and warn everyone you know. Take anything that contains Aspartame back to the store. Send us your case history. I assure you that Monsanto, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is. They fund the American Diabetes Association, American Dietetic Association, Congress and the Conference of the American College of Physicians. The New York Times, on November 15, 1996, ran an article on how the American Dietetic Association takes money from the food industry to endorse their products. Therefore, they cannot criticize any additives or tell about their link to Monsanto. How bad is this? We told a mother who had a child on NutraSweet to get off the product. The child was having Grand Mal Seizures every day. The mother called her physician, who called the ADA, who told the doctor not to take the child off the NutraSweet. We are still trying to convince the mother that the Aspartame is causing the seizures. Every time we get someone off of Aspartame, the seizures stop. If the baby dies, you know whose fault it is and what we are up against. There are 92 documented symptoms of Aspartame from coma to death. The majority of them are neurological because the Aspartame destroys the nervous system.

    Aspartame Disease is partially the cause to what is behind some of the mystery of the Desert Storm health problems. The burning tongue and other problems discussed in over 60 cases can be directly related to the consumption of Aspartame product and several thousand pallets of diet drinks were shipped to the Desert Storm troops. Diet drinks sat in the 120 degree F Arabian sun for weeks at a time on pallets. The service men and women drank them all day long. All of their symptoms are identical to Aspartame Poisoning. Dr. Roberts says that consuming Aspartame at the time of conception can cause birth defects. The phenylanine concentrates in the placenta, causing mental retardation, according to Dr. Louis Elsas, Pediatrician Professor - genetics at Emory University in his testimony before Congress. In the original lab tests, animals developed brain tumors (phenylaline breaks down into DXP, a brain tumor agent). When Dr. Espisto was lecturing on Aspartame, one physician in the audience, a neurosurgeon said, "When they remove brain tumors, they have found high levels of Aspartame in them"

    Stevia, a sweet food, NOT AN ADDITIVE, that helps in the metabolism of sugar, which would be ideal for diabetics, has now been approved as a dietary supplement by the FDA. For years, the FDA has outlawed this sweet food because of their loyalty to Monsanto. If a label says SUGAR FREE, DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CONSUMING IT. Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote a bill that would have warned all infants, pregnant mothers and children of the dangers of Aspartame. The bill would have also instituted independent studies on the problems existing in the population (seizures, changes in brain chemistry, changes in neurological and behavioral symptoms). The bill was killed by the powerful drug and chemical lobbies, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting public.     -Aspartame/Nutrasweet is not very sweet in itself, that may be why Equal puts Dextrose (sugar) and maltodextrin as the first ingredients, so that it tastes sweet.
    Aspartame/Nutrasweet is a brain drug that stimulates your brain so you think that the food you're eating tastes sweet. If you pay attention you'll notice that when using Aspartame/Nutrasweet, everything you eat at the same time also tastes sweet! This may be why Aspartame/Nutrasweet causes you to crave carbohydrates. Hence, you won't lose weight using it.
    BTW, cyclamates got pulled off the market in the 70's in the US (but not Canada or the rest of the world) because the sugar industry saw too much of their market disappear.
    Aspartame/Nutrasweet (aspartylphenylalanine-methyl-ester) breaks down to its poison constituents at 86 degrees (Aspartic Acid 40%, Phenylalanine 50%, and Methanol 10%). Remember your stomach is at 98.6 degrees! Therefore you should never use Aspartame/Nutrasweet in hot beverages or cooked foods such as Jello. How the FDA allows this remains a mystery. There is mounting evidence that the "Burning Mouth Syndrome" experienced by the Desert Storm troops was actually Methanol poisoning from the Diet Coke they drank lots of, after being exposed to desert temperatures.
    Aspartame/Nutrasweet's 10% Methanol appears in the body quickly and is the same alcohol (wood alcohol also in lacquer thinner), that your mother correctly warned you could make you blind. Many skid-row alcoholics had major problems with this cheap but deadly form of alcohol.
    Aspartame/Nutrasweet's 40% Aspartic Acid is an "excitotoxin" in the brain and excites neurons to death, i.e. it kills brain cells and causes other nerve damage.
    Aspartame/Nutrasweet triggers Migraine Headaches This even happened to me!. The Usenet is filled with posts by people who have pinned their migraines down to aspartame/Nutrasweet consumption.
    Aspartame/Nutrasweet's breakdown products attack the bodies tissues and create Formaldehyde which builds up in the tissues forever. Remember the smelly, eye watering fumes from the frogs you dissected in school? They were preserved with Formaldehyde! Formaldehyde is thought to cause cancer.
    The American Bottlers Association did not want the FDA to approve Aspartame/Nutrasweet because of what the test report showed. But the FDA approved it anyway!
    Airline pilots stay away from Aspartame/Nutrasweet because they are well aware of the documented dangers.
    Aspartame/Nutrasweet also breaks down to diketopiperazine [DKP] which is proven to cause Brain Tumors! Brain Tumors used to be rare. Several of the rats in the original study formed brain tumors during their Aspartame/Nutrasweet exposure. The researchers surgically removed the tumors and returned the rats to the study and discounted the tumors.

    4. Fruit Juice

    If you shop at a natural foods store, you will notice that many
    products are sweetened with fruit juice. R.W. Knudsen sodas for
    example taste almost as sweet as junky soda, but are made with fruit
    juice and carbonated water. So you get the vitamins and minerals and
    avoid the junk that usually comes in typical sodas. (I know, a

    Natural jellos can be made with water, fruit juice and agar-agar
    as another example of using fruit juice as a sweetener.

    5. Honey -- It may have contaminents, however, especially if
    it is imported. Be certain of the source and
    quality before using it regularly. Honey should never
    be given to infant and very young children.

    6. Rice Syrup and Yinnie Syrup are often found at natural food
    stores.

    7. Licorice Root

    Licorice root is one of the most commonly used herbs in the world.
    No serious adverse reactions have been published about licorice root.
    *Single* chemical extracts have caused serious adverse reactions on
    occassion when used in medicine or candy, but the whole root does not
    cause these serious reactions. A single chemical extract of
    glycyrrhizin from licorice root causes the blood level of this
    chemical to rise dramatically. This does not happen to when whole
    licorice root is taken in reasonable amounts. (See Environmental

    Dr. Daniel B. Mowrey for a more detailed dicussion of licorice root.

    Most herbalists believe that it is wise to avoid excessive and
    long-term use of licorice root. Many herbalists believe that
    long-term use can cause water retention and hypertension in some
    people. I use it in tea and herbal formulas often, but it *always*
    comprises less than 25% of the formula or tea (usually around 10%).

    Licorice root is safe for diabetics, but I would *not* use it as a
    primary sweetener. Stevia is a better choice for diabetics, in my
    opinion. As an example, you may want to consider using stevia and
    also use fruit juice, small amounts of licorice root in tea, amasake,
    etc. so that you get variety in your diet. Licorice root is best
    used in small amounts to give herbal teas a sweet taste.

    8. Amasake -- Made from sweet brown rice, brown rice and koji
    (starter). The koji breaks down the polysaccharides
    in the rice to disarracharies giving it a very sweet
    taste. Most natural food stores have amasake drinks
    which you can try -- or you can make it yourself.
    Try to avoid drinking too much of the amasake drinks
    made with almonds or nuts as they can be hard on the
    digestion.

    9. Other herbs -- There are a number of plants which can be used
    as a sweetener. Stevia is just one of the more
    popular ones. There are other herbs which are
    sweet and safe for everyone which will be added
    in the future as they become generally available.

    10. Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) -- Another very useful product
    for Candida overgrowth patients as it supports
    the growth of beneficial bacteria. It is a
    little expensive to use in large amounts.

    11. Gradually reduce or eliminate:

    White Sugar
    Brown Sugar -- Brown sugar is usually white sugar mixed
    with molasses or sprayed with caramel coloring.
    Raw Sugar -- Raw sugar is often white sugar with coloring.
    Fructose -- Betware the "natural" products with fructose.
    It's not much better than white sugar (IMO).
    D-tagatose -- Far safer than neotame/aspartame, sucralose,
    etc., but best used as a transitional sweetener
    to healthier ones listed above.
    Corn Syrup
    Dextrose
    Artificial Sweeteners (Nutrasweet (aspartame, "contains
    phenylalanine" on the label), Equal,
    Spoonful, Neotame, Sunette (Acesulfame-k), Splenda
    (Sucralose), Sweetener 2000 / NutraSweet 2000))
    -- Avoid these like the plague. Please don't become a
    guinea pig for another poorly-tested toxic sweetener
    only to find out years from now that it contributed
    to the destruction of your health.

    Important Note: MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) has some of
    the same toxicity mechanisms as the toxic sweetener
    aspartame. In order to cut out MSG, you need to
    remove foods with the following ingredients:
    - Monosodium glutamate
    - hydrolyzed proteins (any type of hydrolyzed protein)
    - autolyzed yeast
    - yeast extract
    - caseinate (in many cases)
    - "Natural Flavors"
    MSG that occurs naturally in tomatos, cheese, etc. is
    absorbed and metabolized differently (safely) due to

    If you shop at a natural foods store, you will notice that many
    products are sweetened with fruit juice. R.W. Knudsen sodas for
    example taste almost as sweet as junky soda, but are made with fruit
    juice and carbonated water. So you get the vitamins and minerals and
    avoid the junk that usually comes in typical sodas. (I know, a
    little bit opinionated.)
