    Usually around $20-$30 from what I hear/gather.

Dunno, I never had my bodyfat tested, as I personally don't see a point in doing it.

I diet until I am HAPPY about how I look, no sense in finding out how "fat" I still am if I have work to do.

Just never made sense to me.

Those handheld devices have gotten better, but they still aren't even as accurate as calipers

That's because bio-electrical impedance sends a small electric current through your body and measures the resistance to flow. Therefore, since your buddy was competing, he was severly dehydrated. Since water is a great conductor of electricity, the machine was totally inaccurate as it is based on hydration status.
Skinfold calipers are the best IMO. Hydrostatic weighing is only good if you can exhale 100% of your air under water, becasue it is based on body density. This is harder than it sounds, you also have to stay under after that to get a underwater weight. If you can't, your residal volume is going to give you some whack numbers!

Yeah. I was 8.25% last year according to calipers and 21.5% according to a $200 set of scales...hrrmmm.
