It is a plant. Oil is sometimes derived from its seeds and that is what you are likely hearing.

    Miriam Webster:

    Main Entry: flax
    Pronunciation: 'flaks
    Function: noun
    Usage: often attributive
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English fleax; akin to Old High German flahs flax, Latin plectere to braid -- more at PLY
1 : any of a genus (Linum of the family Linaceae, the flax family) of herbs; especially : a slender erect annual (L. usitatissimum) with blue flowers commonly cultivated for its bast fiber and seed
2 : the fiber of the flax plant especially when prepared for spinning
3 : any of several plants resembling flax

It contains essential fatty acids. Do a search for them, or just put in EFA's.

Flax or flasxseed is a polyunsaturated fat. A good fat known as EFA=essential fatty acids, meaning they are required for normal bodily functions. They must be included in ones diet. Flax is high in Omega-3 (there are two Omega -6 being the other) rich in ALA-alpha linolenic acid( not to be confused with alpha lipoic acid a great anti oxyidant). Great for homone regulation ,joint health and many more. Fish oil is another Omega-3 but contains EPA & DHA instead of ALA. Ratio's should be about a 2:1 of 6's vs. 3's. But because of high fat meats this ratio is lopsided too much 6's. If there is too much 6s they will inhibit the 3's properties..
